I hate websites like upwork and freelancer, its impossible to outbid the other applicants while maintaining a price that makes the work worth the trouble. Yet without them its impossible to find clients who are willing to pay $1k for anything no matter how big of a project it is, they keep looking for $200 solutions. Hows a developer supposed to raise some cash for a house and shit like that.

Short answer, on those sites, you're not. They exist for clients who want the cheapest crappiest work for the cheapest price, and putting any effort into those sites is entirely wasted.

If you want to do freelancing / contracting, then charge fair prices and build up a good rapport with companies - if you keep them happy, they'll keep coming back.
