My two cents.
1.) It's an act of creation. Which is rare in my family. The fact I exist goes against my families nature.
2.) It's an art form at this point (I would say I rank between Kindergarten and Picaso. About 10th grade desk doodler)
3.) It's just fucking fun... I can get lost in it for hours.

1) Having the opportunity to read and write the future, with no one telling you that you can't
2) feeling superior to non-techies because as this world gets more and more digital every day, you have more potential to control them or make them dependent on you
3) hopefully the AI overlords will be more peaceful to programmers because we created them....
