looks like cloudflare doesn't believe in free speech. thoughts?
https://new.blog.cloudflare.com/ter...

section 230 not to mention the first amendment means platforms are not liable for user created content. objectivity is a must. cloudflare breaks the social compact with this decision.

@irene "Wait... You mean I can't yell on everybody and insult them?! How dare you threaten my free speech!"

8chan is know to not be a place of intellectual thoughts, rather promoting violence and degradation of other humans.

Cloudflare is not a governing body, and thus can act how they want - booting 8chan from their services.

@Linux There are lots of paradoxal thoughts in certain people's mind. For example, private companies are allowed to do everything they want, but at the sale time, they can't do anything that goes against what these people believe.
    No different than Schrödinger's cat.

@irene Freedom of speech means exactly that. Or are you trying to tell me that freedom of speech only applies to socially acceptable opinions?

I don't particularly like the things they say on 8chan, but I fully believe in their right to say it.

There used to be a saying: "I don't agree with what you have to say, but I'll die for your right to say it." I haven't heard anyone say that in a long time.

This generation of millenials grew up to be a bunch of dickless little whiney bitches. I can only shake my head...

Private companies are not directly bound to the terms of free speech of the constitution.
As a private company it can also terminate its contracts at any time, especially if the customers do seem to ignore the law (a reason what Cloudflare clearly stated). Everyone can choose its business partners by themselves.

If 8chan its rights violated it can try its luck at court.

And by the way: You should read 230 again.

@Gogeta70 yes, freedom of speech means that you can say whatever you want without having to fear repercussions.

What it doesn't mean is that private entities have to share or publish your opinions. If Cloudflare chooses that they don't like the content on 8chan they can terminate the contract.

@Gogeta70 No, this is not what freedom of speech means.

    Freedom of speech:
    - protects any speaker from actions directly against him (e.g. insults, violence) in consequence for his beliefs, but not against other individuals (private companies, too!) not sharing/publishing his opinions.
    - the speaker from the state, which also enforces the above and may not restrict his right.

Let's take an analogue example: A regular publisher (here 8chan) publishes a manifesto of a killer with out knowing the writer is one. After knowing it, a completely normal action would be for any bookstore (Cloudflare) not offer that book anymore and force the publisher to check better in the future if the publisher wants to continue business with the store.
Back to digital world: This is not the first time, 8chan did not react to content published there.

This is a platform doing action against another platform. Not against any individual.

@sbiewald Claudflare did not say that 8chan broke any law. If I'm wrong, please do quote them doing exactly that.

@arraysstartat1 "We reluctantly tolerate content that we find reprehensible, but we draw the line at platforms that have demonstrated they directly inspire tragic events and are lawless by design. 8chan has crossed that line. It will therefore no longer be allowed to use our services."

@irene @korrat @sbiewald I understand that freedom of speech doesn't apply to private companies, only government. The problem is that we mostly communicate now through services provided by private companies - effectively skirting around freedom of speech.

I think Benjamin Franklin said it quite nicely: "Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety."

Now stop being fools and literally asking for your rights to be taken anyway. I never thought people would be dumb enough to actually celebrate censorship. Morons. Fucking morons.

Freedom of speech doesn’t mean speech free of consequence. Yes you have every right to say whatever you want without jailing you for it (if for example you badmouth your president) but this also means Cloudflare has the right to ban you for it if they wish.

@irene Most definitely. It's time to hit the "mute button".

@pycharming You are quite right on that, sir. Unfortunately, many people have trouble understanding that (or choose not too).

Freedom of speech means you don't go to jail for saying whatever you want to say, it doesn't mean people have to listen.

Strange how often those get confused...

@Gogeta70 How is it censorship? Cloudflare have simply declined to offer a service. 8chan can set up shop elsewhere if they so wish.

Geez, I heard less complaining when Github et. al were forced to block users in whole swathes of countries...

@AlmondSauce Are you kidding? Censorship is making something unavailable to others because you don't like what it says.

    😧

"Never argue with an idiot, they'll bring you down to their level and beat you with experience."
Lots of experience here. I'm out.
