A couple times a week my girlfriend tells me that she leaves work. She travels with a motorised vehicle for about 45 minutes. I am responsible of cooking food on those days. The food preparation takes around 7 minutes of cutting vegetables and the cooking takes around 20 minutes. the current time of reading the message is 17:17. She had send the message at 17:08. At what time should I start making food in order to be finished at the time she gets home?

I start to relate more and more to school math questions...

Maybe I should make an app for this or website to calculate automatically.

And people say that word problems are silly.

@powerfulparadox I keep telling my kid word problems show you how math is used in real life. Many times I struggled without a word problem to give me the real-world use case.

@sylar182 Exactly. If you talk through a real-world math problem to yourself, guess what? You've created a word problem! Now you may proceed as usual. (The only problem with real-world word problems is they usually don't have nice, simple - preferably integer - solutions.)

@powerfulparadox My teachers know the subjects inside out but never use a textbook, they pick the constants off the top of their heads. They can prove us any time that the problem has a solution because they construct it that way, but it's almost always irrational with several square roots and a fraction coefficient of three digits.

@Lor-inc That's a bit farther than I would recommend, but at least you have lots of practice with awkward solutions.
