In hindsight, what questions you wish you had asked your current/most recent employer before joining the company?

"Do you plan on being a dick about raises during my whole PhD studies?"

I wish I had asked if all my coworkers were gonna be all either a 8 or 10 on “being a cunt” scale.

Do you use services from the big tech companies (google, Facebook, Microsoft)?

I have a big ass grudge against those companies so if the company would have, I'd say thanks and bye. (Previous employer and they didn't)

@grumpyoldaf Something something humongous amount of data collection.

@grumpyoldaf Data collection, windows (I fucking hate proprietary OS's), their involvement in the biggest mass surveillance program in the world....

Wish I had asked how large the 'technical debt' of the current system/code base is and what/if they where planning on fixing that in the foreseeable future ...

@linuxxx why do you hate proprietary os’es ?

@linuxxx what is the alternative? Self hosted Foss?

@grumpyoldaf The basis of being able to run a stable and secure operating system is that it's open source. I mean, if its security can't be verified independently by anyone who wants to audit the code, then how the fuck would you be able to all it secure at all?

For the record, I've worked at a hosting company where the servers and our own desktops only ran Linux (except for a few windows server exceptions but those came without SLA's) for the reason of security and insanely fast patches and updates.

@BoKKeR Not per definition, there are plenty of privacy friendly options.

There are a lot of alternatives to services hosted by the big tech companies (I use Tutanota for email, for example)
