Am I the only person who thinks Linux is best for only servers and similar usages? It being a primary OS is more of a pain than it's worth.

Depends on what you work with and your habits.
If you are gamer stick to windows.

But if you don't need any app that's windows only, but work with python/php/whatever linux would be better for you if you learn why for your use case.

i prefer it for dev work but i need windows for my gaming sessions i rarely have and for those clients that say that they have bug in IE

I like Linux as an OS but the thing that always pulls me back to windows is A. Gaming, B. Software Availability and/or C. I accidentally break the whole thing.

Mainly programs like office, the open source or alternate versions are really no comparison to the Microsoft versions of Word etc.

Personally don't agree. I've used Linux as primary is (next to servers) for almost seven years now and I'll never switch to anything else I think. also because I mainly refuse to work with closed source software

@linuxxx Any reason why you wouldn't work with closed source software? I think this is pretty impossible to do, in fact you are using software that is closed source now :)

For me it's Linux for servers and OSx for everything else. I am at least consistent on using Unix systems.

When I was in my early teens I never had the money to put an extra 100 bucks into a custom build. I would just install mint every time. Now whenever I use windows I feel like bill gates should probably be killed.

Furthermore just because you don't like an OS doesn't mean others don't like that OS, and doesn't mean that it's not the most widely used in the world.

For me it's Linux for servers, Mac for design/programming, and windows for media/games.

but with linux dev its easier to clone/replicate production problems, on windows i need a vm for that and on mac nothing ever works exactly right (eg ssl is a pain, even with brew) and i need a plugin for ssh-copy-id, which is turn is porly ssh design

@DarkMukke It's only easier to recreate issues relative to the systems your application runs on. If you use Linux day to day but your application runs on Windows, well then Windows would be the better platform to use.

Every time I hear an argument like this I have to ask: have you ever seriously tried Linux for at least a couple of years? Because I have and I am never developing in Windows ever again.

The system is orders of magnitude slower, works OK on SSDs but on cheap hardware is close to unusable.
There are always hidden 'features', that update your settings, then it annoys you about disabling them, and sometimes stuff stops working until you let it have its way.
Viruses and the protection against them is another headache.

Those are just some of the problems with Windows. Now why is Linux different?

Anything you have there can be changed.
You have virtualization in the kernel.
It actually teaches you a lot about the operating systems in general.
Has a very good community.

It sucks that Adobe and DirectX are not there, I am aware of that. Though you can try it under the wine.

But for anything else, Linux is far superior and a much secure way of doing things. And it pushes you forward.

@sage I develop on OSx though, not Windows.
