@coleever I'm assuming you have your benchmarks handy to back your theory? A $1000 hackintosh isn't going to be better than a $1000 mac! And certainly isn't gonna be easier to maintain.. op my advice, buy a MacBook circa 2011 model, replace hdd with a small ssd, then replace optical drive with a a hdd bay and put there the original hard drive, upgrade ram and you will have a good enough machine..

@koukou what would that cost? And why a HDD bay?

@coleever im just looking for something cheap and powerful that i can possibly dualboot if needed, with a decent amount of RAM (~12-16gb) and a decent processor for coding and general day to day school work (preferably desktop)

@DeveloperACE you should be able to do it with around $500.. you have to look for a deal on eBay, perhaps if someone local to you you could pay them cash of a discount..But you will not be able to go over 8gb ram with older models.. If you remove the optical drive( who uses dvds anymore) you can put a bay that is the same size as the optical drive but can accept a hard drive. In that way you have two hard drives- the sad for your programs and the second hard drive for music movies etc. I have done that mod many times and the difference is great! Look it ain't top of the line but if I was on a low budget that's the option I would go with!

@coleever a 2011 mb is nowhere near $1000. With $1000 I can get a MacBook retina, spend a 1000 on a hackintosh and tell me if it's smoother than the rMBP. Anyway I am not debating this any further as it's pointless..
