unpopular opinion: maybe updates would take under <super long time that's overblown> if you did it more often. Also defrag your standard HDDs like every month (weekly if you really want the performance boost)

    Or buy an ssd - it was surprising the difference that makes.

    @Parzi I get they are not cheap for a lot of people, but it's a lot cheaper then buying a more powerful machine.

    I upgraded my last laptop as far as I could (8GB ram, 256gb ssd) from the base which was 2GB + 750GB hdd

    it made a lot of difference?m, but the processor was 7 years old A6 amd low end thing so ended up getting a MSI laptop to replace it:.

    @C0D4 i have a 1GHz single-banger effectively at 600MHz that I did the same to.

    It's in a box here somewhere.

    Updated a system for the first time in ages (1+ year) recently, 1gb+ in updates, done in 5 minutes...
