@kescherRant most of the keyboard is a metal backing with a plastic cover that holds all the switches in place. The outer case isn't the issue.
My Model M's dead. Accidentally flooded the inside when cleaning it. After letting it dry upside-down a few days, it just holds a random key when plugged in and nothing else works. Can't open it all the way up as it's a plastic-rivet one.
