THE FUCK. I WANT TO PLAY AGE OF EMPIRES DEFINITIVE EDITION, WHICH I BOUGHT OVER STEAM. IT STARTED ONE TIME, AND DID NOT AGAIN START. NO GAME IS WORKING NOW. WHY IS LINUX GAMING WORKING FOR ANYONE ELSE BUT NOT FOR ME.

    Maybe it's because you forgot caps lock on

    Besides the whole.... linux + gaming part?
  • 4
    @C0D4 It's actually gone a lot better these last years, but for sure the support is not quite the one that Windows gets.
    I can't manage to launch Aoe II DE either though, it just crashes after the splash screen despite trying all the patches and tricks that the Internet has in store
  • 0
    @nonox do you have links
  • 0
    i now installed a lot of amd original drivers from amd for ubuntu, they seem to be installable starting from 19.50 ubuntu version on debian. i assume the issue is PROTON, the game crashes when initializing proton full screen game view.
  • 2
    Why would someone try playing games on linux tho?
  • 1
    @molaram it is at least 15-25% faster
  • 5
    @shakur only if you get it to work
  • 1
    @dontPanic yes, and no reason to use windows 10 for age of empires
  • 7
    @molaram because it's actually becoming a viable option
  • 4
    @shakur "it is at least 15-25% faster"

    To be blunt, I think you pulled than number firmly out of your ass, along with the claim it's faster in the first place.
  • 4
    @VaderNT No comment on the number, but there are definitely cases where it's performing better than Windows. If I recall correctly, Doom 2016 is one of those.
  • 1
    @VaderNT nope based on severall triple A game FPS ratings that where compared it is around 15% to 25% faster, faster here means creates more FPS

    FOUND THE FUCKING ISSUE. A FUCKING COMPANY NAMED SAPHIRE BUILD A FUCKING RX 560 VERSION WHICH IS IN FACT RX 560D AND HAS LESS SHADERS THAN THE ORIGINAL RX 560, AND THE LINUX DRIVER ON DEBIAN CANNOT HANDLE IT, BUT THE POP OS DRIVER SEEMS TO WORK.
  • 2
    @Jilano Red Dead Redemption 2 has some minor speedups on Linux vs Windows sometimes too, using compatibility mode and not Linux native. Something to the tune of 1-4%, but still, Proton's juuuuuust starting to really be a viable solution.
  • 1
    @Parzi iplayed 3 hours, it was so good, on my screwed rx 560 D!... unbelievable I am sure on Windows 10 it would have been laggy
  • 0
    @shakur
    > severall triple A game FPS ratings that where compared

    Specifics, please? Where can I read that? Seriously, if I can get a 15-25% fps boost just by installing Linux, I'm gaming on Linux tomorrow. Too good to be true?

    > FOUND THE FUCKING ISSUE

    Grats. Wow, that was an odd one. Have fun playing!
  • 1
    @molaram masochistic tendencies I swear.
  • 0
    @shakur Specifics please! Like a comparative performance test, not just the ProtonDB front page.

    You probably read specifics somewhere there and hoped I'd find it myself. I didn't. Please help me out.

    Why am I so sceptical? A huge performance gap IMHO is a pretty wild claim. PC gaming is important to Microsoft. If that gap existed they'd optimize their whole stack to catch up. As they have before.

    What I found is Forbes' comparison, painting a mixed picture:
    https://forbes.com/sites/...
    Pop!_OS is ahead sometimes. Up to 14% with Vulkan. Wow!

    Though Vulkan isn't generally faster on Linux than Windows. In the aforementioned Doom they're on par: https://youtube.com/watch/...

    Echoed by this Reddit thread: https://reddit.com/r/linux_gaming/...

    For now, I consider the performance gap untrue.

    @VaderNT I will get back to you asap. I have to find them again. Kind regards.

    @shakur thanks, I appreciate it.

    @VaderNT first information:

    you do not use WINE for gaming, you use a fork of wine, called PROTON ... which is optimized for gaming,

    on Linux you do not use DirectX, but VULKAN for the middle-ware layer of graphics API access,

    this is based on three possible drivers:

    - amdgpu - oss (fully open source edition), full linux drivers

    - amdgpu - pro (closed-source parts), fully linux drivers

    - or: the nvidia-driver-430 or 440 drivers (Nvidia also natively develops Linux drivers)

    ...

    so here is one test by Linus I found:

    https://youtu.be/6T_-HMkgxt0?t=236

    I will add several more links, when I find them. But here you already here, it is faster, besides using an PROTON overhead.

    @VaderNT

    here is another comparison, which shows it is nearly as fast as on windows, but this is a comparison of most widely used games

    https://youtube.com/watch/...

    you have to consider, .. those games are being optimized for directx and windows usage ...

    i am currently searching for assassins creed series games, because they also work natively on linux ... which means, they are FASTER than on windows
  • 0
    @VaderNT

    https://youtube.com/watch/...

    Assasins Creed ... same speed as on windows + up to 5% more FPS

    the difference gets greater, the older the PC is... due to the overhead of the operating system (here windows looses), when comparing non-high end gaming pc's you'll see up to 15% performance difference

    @VaderNT

    I have a PC which was not able to make me play Mirror's Edge ...

    I switched to Pop OS! and now I am able to play Mirror's Edge while surfing, listening to online radio, coding and an high speed system feeling ...

    I am getting 2500MB/s read/write speed out of my NVMe ... instead of 300 MB/s on Windows ... noone can tell me, that this has no impact on the overall system performance ... but considering that the graphics card didn't change ... I am at least feeling the game is up to 50% faster due to PROTON + VULKAN + AMDGPU usage ...

    @VaderNT

    Linux Gaming is the driver of LInux system installation highs, since this year.

    The older the system the more FPS you get out of it, ... in high-end-systems you will notice barely any difference, if the game works.

    If I find the last video where the get +15% to 20% gains overall of all games, I will post it here.

    Consider, the average user has no hight end gaming system. Linux is faster and using less resources than Windows. Pop Os has such a good look&feel ... i never witnessed anything like this on a Linux system before. I completely switched to LInux.

    @VaderNT

    I also switched my Virus scanner to Dr. Web, which is a REAL protection solution. I bought 3+ years license for up to two computers. I hated those free and comercial products, that didn't protect me. But Dr. Web on Windows had a REAL firewall, and on Linux they are upgrading the solution year by year.

    @shakur thanks dude. No wonder I couldn't find much, I wasn't looking for videos.

    I'll get back to you when I watched them.
  • 0
    @shakur how did you test r/w speed of your ssd on Linux?
  • 0
    @electrineer hdparm or similar
  • 1
    @shakur are you sure it was the drive speed and not something else? You have to be careful.
  • 0
    @electrineer
    Fly on the wall: hdparm does simple read speed. Need dd for write speed
    Fio is probably more accurate, different block rates if I recall.
  • 0
    @electrineer yes i own a samsung nvme which supports up to 3.5gb/s and i get 2.9gb/s max, usually around 2.2gb/s
  • 0
    @SortOfTested yes you can also use dd for testing

    my whole system sensor values droped significantly, i dont understand fully why, but now, when i use the parts cpu gpu they get hot and when i dont ise them they dont, on windows they always were getting hotter even when not using them...

    cpu on windows 55-65 degrees
    cpu on linux 40 degrees

    gpu on windows.. cant remember
    gpu on linux 45 degrees

    considering AMD will bring Ryzen Master to Linux, I assume the whole thing will become so good I can't imagine Windows to be gaining any land from gamers territory anymore...

    2020 is the year of Linux Gaming with Ryzen APUs, remember my words when AMD launches 7 APUs for Desktop processors this month
  • 0
    the Intel killer will be a APU called Ryzen 4700G... this thing has 8 CU's with 512 shaders working at 2.1 GHZ and are even overclockable..

    8 core cpu
    8 core gpu

    This thing will eraze low end gpus completely from the market.
