I have mine just on the default f12, but I do have linux sounds set up to the legend of zelda sound effects so when I open the terminal it makes the press pause sound effect from windwaker. XD

Terminator is one of the most powerful imo. You can customize it to act like guake. You'll have the best of both worlds!

I'm using xterm with settings in the .Xressources (font, colors, ...) combined with tmux and sessions with tmuxinator. Works best for me.
