Any thoughts about transitioning from a Lead developer to a senior architect?

A lot less coding and a lot more writing about code, classes, modules, process flows, infrastructure and tech stacks. A good job if you want to lift your focus up a level or three from the gritty details of implementation.

Visio or similar, Archimate or similar and a lot of Word. 😉

It really is fun at this level as well, as long as you make sure to get your coding fix satisfied enough so you wont get frustrated with the lack of hands on, getting dirty and digging in.

I also find the hardest parts of being an architect is the lack of coding at work...
It's actually a bit hard to keep up with all the new stuff and the only way I can do that is to code more at home and do side projects...

But apart from that, it's fun up here too at this level and you are really needed...

Could you tell me what is it exactly that an architect is best for? Designing systems? I fail to see point. Architects design systems which developers implement and during those implementations with all the change requirements that design gets old fast, no matter how good it started... at least thats what I feel about it. :/

There are different types of architects, and yes, they think in a broader context than an individual developer does and has a more closer collaboration and contact with the stakeholder and project leader.
The developers are only there for developing the solution the architect has designed... in smaller companies the developers sometimes takes the role of an architect but they also then lack the mandates that an architect has to take the full grip of the product and make sure it is sustainable over time and dosent cost to much.

Funny thing is I am already designing every system our internal team builds as the technical lead. I think I will gain more exposure about what other teams are doing as well. I will miss the coding a lot.
