Just got off an interview for a junior fullstack role but I actually am more of a backend person and still learning the ropes. and that's what I enjoy. this may be a bad decision. Would you go for a fullstack role as a backend engineer? Seems stupid honestly.

    Full stack is just a buzzword that means they don't care about specialization, they view the engineers as interchangable cogs.

    A responsible company with a well run team will cross train for coverage, but not expect everyone to be a master at every part of the system.

    Your job is to figure out which of these two things applies to the firm you're interviewing with.

    @SortOfTested Thank you for this. It is a startup so I suppose their teams are pretty lean.

    Who cares if someone else would do it?

    Do you WANT to?

    @N00bPancakes Good question.
    Not exactly. But then, is it possible to remain solely as a backend engineer forever? So I just thought I could try my hands. Lol, I didn't even think I would make it to the interview stage.

    @ochuwa Yes, it's entirely possible to remain a backend engineer forever - there's heaps to get into, learn, specialise in, etc. Many people specialise further than backend (DB, ops, storage, software, etc.) and remain that way for their entire career.

    Fullstack is *not* an area you have to go into if you don't want to.

    I'm firmly a backend guy, mostly in Java / Kotlin and AWS, and I've never remotely (no pun intended) struggled finding work within that skillset.

    I wouldn't do it, but then I also have absolutely no desire to do front end either. A full stack position would be my own personal hell.

    I did it, but I enjoy hell.
    Fullstack is just being able to work on any project handed to you in any capacity expected.

    It would be a rare place where you own the entire system ( infra, devops, backend, frontend ), but that's not to say it doesn't happen.

    If you have no interest in frontend, then stay as a backend, otherwise level up ...err, broaden your skill set... and welcome to the team, you never know, you may enjoy hell like the rest of us.

    @C0D4 Thanks. I'll give it some thought.
