I would say, if you're not already, get very familiar with Linux, learn the commands on something like Ubuntu for starters, then migrate to Kali, learn a LOT about networking, try to find some tutorials on Internet but not that bullshit "how t0 h4ck teh Wifee lulz" learn from serious people
I was lucky my company gives me full access to Pluralsight because the courses to pass the CEH are amazing but I guess you can find similar stuff on YouTube
Set up a good environment for testing and practicing, mount multiple VM, to emulate a small local network to exploit for example
Then practice and try to get your mind to look for weaknesses thanks to what you learned
And then try to build your own tool for your pentests with python for example, also try to learn C++ for reverse engineering malware and stuff
If you know it works, you can break it or make it do what you want.

Ive started a Masters degree in Informationsmanagement and it security and the first Semester (dropped out because it was fucking boring) was mostly encryption stuff - things like how different algorithms work, theoretical Alice and Bob stuff and so on.

@dsteiner I pity you when you say encryption is boring

@asgs oh it's not boring. Just the way how this all was presented was boring.
