apparently non-moving slack CAT5e can go bad overnight

    Well did you look at the expiration date? Some also have a "best before" date

    @jeeper Yes, but they don't get up anywhere nearby and it wasn't dangling down at all

    @jeeper they physically can't reach it, have never gone anywhere near its area and don't care about ethernet cords in general. Power cords, though...
