I have only been a dev for about 6 months now and have already had 3 separate 'friends' approach me with these amazing ideas for an app I should help them build

If they have a great idea AND they are a proven marketer then it may be worth your time to listen.
Listen to their detailed plan and now they will execute. Usually these scenarios are nothing but you never know until you listen.

I always listen too. I even work for shitty ideas if they pay my price xD
But I always go with - this is my price, after their talk.
I decline extreme shitty ideas like fb clone for 100€ for me+server. (I've been offered this)

I work for free only when i do group project with my friends.

The worst is when you pause and ask them:

Me: "So how is any money being made from this?"

Them: "I hadn't thought about that..."

Of course my pet hate is:

Them: "So I have this app idea, we'll need a database of some sort."

Me: "OK, what sort?"

Them: "Well whatever you think is best, anyway, the mobile app front end..."

Me: "Sorry gonna have to stop you there again, about the database... What do you mean whatever I think best? You didn't tell me what I was storing."

Them: "You know data."

Me: "Yes but how much? What type of support do you want? Is it related or not?"

Them: "I dunno, it's a technical decision I don't want to make it!"

Me: "I can't make an informed choice without knowing expected users, or usage etc cos I might blindly pick the wrong one."

Them: "Why do you have to be awkward, it's just a database it's not hard. Just use that access thing!"

Me: -_- "I will end you."

then I reply: "in that case, I will buy the gun, you shoot yourself!"
