Javascript's the first computer language I ever saw. I was 13. We had one hour a month of 56k internet on that pentium 1 windows 98 old tower - that is when my mum was paying the bill, soooo sometime. So one day, I was bored, and dived into the C:/ drive, and somehow opened a .js file in the cache. I learned other languages, skipped the comp-sci to do psychology, but always sorta came back to it. Imho, no other languages (expect maybe C or PHP at the time) so obviously represent democratization of computers. So sure, they are messy because they are the fruit of a broad consensus, not from a specific corporation or academia.
