Worst dev disaster?

Welp, my now 6 year old Mac keeps sending signal to my monitors that in my experience regardless of OS generally says "my video card is gonna fuckin die soon".

I've re-installed the Windows partition like 3 times, but that responds to the video card problems so bad it pretty much just BSODs... but the Mac side soldiers on, just occasionally having weird visual glitches. Thats fine, I work on the Mac side.

And I don't really want to spend a shit ton on a new computer... but I do want a Mac, so I'm gonna spend a shit ton.

So now I have to decide if I can hold out for an M1 or if I should just shell like thousands for a Mac that will be out of date in like 4 months. After which for development purposes I'd still have to buy at least the M1 dev kit Mac Mini.

All of which hinges on this effing video card lasting another few months.

Because if it doesn't I'm going to have to use my kids 8GB fuckin HP laptop as my main dev machine while I get another Mac in the mail and that would fucking suck not to mention the like minimum two days sleep I'd lose just setting up the required local environments I'd need... not to mention I'd have to do all that in Windows... so I'd have to find Windows equivalents for all my dev tools. Or fuck it, maybe I could just install Putty and server cowboy everything... but it would still suck.

And, of course, I don't have time to do any of that because I have the normal like 2 tight deadlines on shit.

The next few months of my life, potentially my ability to earn a living, potentially my sanity...

Hangs on the health of a fucking six year old heavily abused video card.

This is what you get for abuse

@AtuM starting at about $5400, yes.

    @AtuM meh...

My current Mac was just shy of four grand and I made like 700k with it so...

And yeah... I could get a comparable windows comp for half that... but then I’d spend the next five years deving on Windows like a fucking casual.

(I need Mac for iOS dev... but I also use it for all other dev because Windows is an abomination to god. )

Yeah people talk about about Mac for being expensive, overpriced, etc
This is the very example that the cost for saving time is well worth it.
I don't even do iOS stuff and I've been using Mac for years. Can I switch to others? Yes I have a year ago. But for certain stuff it's just way more efficient to do on a familiar environment.

I'm not an OSX fan or even user... But I do wish Apple did something like AWS workspaces (desktop as a service) for OSX.

I wouldn't care if it was a relatively expensive service, but just being able to easily rent a legit remote OSX box for a few hours would be awesome.

I don't get it, people buy MACs, they tend to have a bad experience with them but also want to buy a MAC again when it breaks...

Can someone explain this for me?

@Kirito-kun So the thing is... this Mac is still running... when whatever hardware problems its suffering have already ended Windows.

That and while I don't love spending thousands on a Mac I honestly view Windows 10 as among the shittier operating systems in human history.

    It's just garbage.

It's not that I choose to spend more money on a Mac because I like Mac, so much as that I hate everything else MORE.

And I mean, I did get 6 years of both development and AAA gaming out of the same box at a cost of about $60 per month...

And then really I COULD and probably WILL replace the video card when it finally does die and then give my kids this computer for school... so I would expect another 5 years out of it.

Really the only issue is that I'm looking at potentially being without a solid development machine for 2 weeks to a month.

@HiFiWiFiSciFi Oh that's pretty neat! Minimum billed time of 24h, $26 per day is very steep though...
