TL;DR: academic survey over devRant, 5-7 minutes https://forms.gle/do2KK8cGfv5w6cjY9

We are a group of researchers from Canada, Italy, and the Netherlands, studying communication between software developers. We would like to understand the role devRant plays in developers' professional life and the perceived advantages and disadvantages of the platform.

To this end we created an overview of the topics discussed. The purpose of this survey is to get your opinion on the overview. The results of the survey will be reported in a research manuscript, which will be submitted for a peer-reviewed publication.

The survey will take 5-7 minutes. The collection and analysis of the data are governed by a strict privacy policy in both North America and Europe. As such, your responses will be anonymized and any personally identifying information will be removed. While the survey has been approved by @dfox individual answers will not be shared with him or any other party not directly involved in the research.

We thank you for your participation.

Another one done. But is it supposed to read "Gender Identify" in the last question?

@aheisleycook not sure what you are asking :-)

@guddin isn't it gender identity. I'm not sure myself.

@p100sch you are correct, it's a typo. It should be "gender identity" :-) thank you for pointing this out.

    Whoosh! Done.

    Is DevRant a crowdsourcing platform?
  • 2
Fuck, I'm using devRant to put MTurk jobs next time. Never knew about it's crowd-sourcing capabilities, 😂

When the next devrant update contains ads, I know who is to blame 😏

This survey is a train wreck.

The short of it: devs like to talk to other devs (duh) and having a nice anonymous place to vent is basically perfect. Clients suck, codebases suck, tools suck, management sucks. We can’t really talk about any of this elsewhere, and certainly not without it being out of place.

But as for the platform: it isn’t rocket science here. There’s no magic combination of topics, no magic UI, no magic fancy features. DevRant is a simple platform designed around what devs need/want in a platform. Nothing fancy, underhanded, over-engineered, etc. It serves the needs of the people it’s designed for, and it does this pretty well.

It has flaws, of course, and there’s some contention on what those are. But it’s pretty nice as it stands. It makes its audience happy.

@theabbie obviously they are trying to make it croudsourcing with this survey.
I guess there is a bit if you use/participate in the projects.

@p100sch Thank you so much, I have fixed the typo
  • 1
@Benedikt This is one of the reasons why we reduced the personal information to the bare minimum we needed for the study.
  • 3
@theabbie we consider devRant a place where developers not only can share their joys and frustrations, but also they can collaborate with each other. We do not absolutely consider devRant as Mtruck :-)

    Sorry, couldn't resist 🙃

    @Condor That’s amazing 😂
  • 1
@Condor and @Root, we agree that's a tricky question. Please use any term that you are the most comfortable with :-) We hope our research will introduce devRant to the research community and that will hopefully contribute to the further growth and acknowledgement of this amazing community. We would appreciate if all of you could respond to the survey and encourage fellow devRanters to participate as well :-)
