I think Medium shouldn't be regarded as one entity but rather as all of the random people whom they somehow allows to publish on there. I don't know exactly how they function, but it seems like they aren't like your "normal" publication where you have 3-4 full-time editors/authors.

I've seen more crap than not on medium articles these days. Used to be alright, but not any longer.
