!rant

Decided to take a AI course bc i felt it was going to be a cool topic and because I have no experience with AI.

I find out on the first day of class that we are using a implementation of Scheme called Scheme Chez Petite.

Scheme is cool and I like using it. I feel like it makes me think in different ways u know.

However, I have a 2015 Macbook air. And a bunch of my classmates have similar Macbooks too.

Our Prof. told us that the only fucking way to run scheme Chez petite locally is through a fucking windows VM.

So now I have to download a fucking 10GB windows OS so I can fucking do my homework.

And, since i have a 2015 Macbook air, everytime I start the VM, my computer sounds like its gunna fucking explode and it absolutely destroys the battery life.

I feel like there is a better way to do this than through the VM. Or maybe not using Scheme Chez Petite and maybe something else? idk

    Am I being pessimistic or does it seem like there is probably a better solution than using this

    Ditch the course and go for Python/Keras/Tensorflow instead. There should be tons of learning material and a huge community around that stuff by now.

    There is also Matplotlib (data visualization) for Python.

    @Oktokolo I would totally do something like that (bc i love python) but unfortunately this is the only AI course offered at my school

    Ill probably end up doing something w tensorflow in my free time hopefully

    Chances are you will be extremely far ahead by the end of the course just because your tooling is easier to try out stuff with.
    Experimentation is everything when it comes to ANNs (at least for non-math-geniuses)...

    "Scheme Chez Petite" sounds like a low carb snack food.

    Well, when it comes to computer languages, Scheme is as low anything as it gets. No carbs, no fat, no flavor, no regrets when switching to something else...

    @DeepHotel it may be the only course for AI in you school, but there are many MOOCs concerning the subject, too.

    You could try the latest Petite Chez Scheme from https://www.scheme.com/csv8.4/
    There are OS X versions there. (Being a Linux/Windows fella, I can't test them for you).

    Or, you can download the latest Chez Scheme from https://github.com/cisco/ChezScheme and SWL from e.g. https://www.scheme.com/swl.html and compile it yourself.

    Or you can use that VM, of course.
