In my current company we're being forced to use Windows for web development... I can't use a VM because of the hardware specs.
This is now my screensaver.57 -
Explain the movie Inception to a programmer.....
Basically, when you run a VM inside another VM, inside another VM, inside another VM…, everything runs real slow!5 -
I remember back at study I had this friend who hated windows just as much as I did.
Then, for a project, he HAD to run windows on his laptop.
He was very fucking angry about that but did this:
Installed a Linux (debian?) vm (virtualbox) on his laptop and gave it all the spare resources.
Then he ran it fullscreen.
He was still using windows technically but at boot up he booted up the Linux vm and he just worked with that one.
Teacher wasn't pleased but he couldn't do much since the fucker ran windows on his laptop as instructed xD13 -

Tonight, I had the pleasure of being challenged to make a virus for a VM over at the awesome "virus aquarium": computernewb.com
I present to you the Eevee fork/bomb.
Tonight, was the first night where I've ever sat down and programmed in VBS. I had a lot of fun doing it too. Right now I'm aiming at corrupting taskkill, tskill, and shutdown for good measure. These are a few of the things that my buddy has pulled on me that has made it difficult for me to continue moving forward.
The other part is to create seperate .exe files that would run my the necessary script. Each of these .exe files will be unique such that it's more difficult to shut all of them down at once.
Despite the fact that this thing will quite literally break your computer, it's fun being challenged to think outside of the box. Quite literally. I've always been careful about what things I touched on a PC, but tonight was fun because I was basically unchained and allowed to run rampant.
As a computer geek I think it's good to let out your inner demon and see what havoc one could wreak.11 -
My fiancée was complaining about how one of her classes at the University requires using a PC to run some obscure program so she would have to study in the library as she has a Mac. I asked if she wanted me to spin up a Windows VM. After explaining what that means she freaked out saying "You can do that?!". Yes. Because I am part God.9

This tini tiny forky bomby is so cute than you probably want to execute it... at least in a VM / Container.13
-
Use Docker, it's awesome because you won't need VMs anymore.
Using Win7: You need a VM for running docker. 😫10 -
So I was looking at the linux environment at my new job. Found 2 VM's in the local network, only one of them is documented. Noone knows about the other one or what it does, let alone usernames and passwords.
Spent over an hour trying to break in, only to find out that a couple of bored devs, that have long since left the company, set up a game server on there and noone noticed it for the past 3 years..5 -
Thank you Java Visual VM... Apperently my program is so good that I now have 8 times my processing power...
That's very useful9 -
After a painstakingly slow conversion of a VM virtual hd, I got informed with this.
My heart skipped a beat seeing that icon.4 -
I just set up a Win10 VM. We have now officially reached the point where it is easier to install Linux than Windows.undefined no i don't want to see ads yes i'm sure win10 no i don't want to use an online account windows no i don't want to talk to cortana fuckmicrosoft vm3

When you think, you are on playground VM and you try : sudo rm -rf /etc , realizing it was your Workstation... my collegue did it last week.3
-
Dear uni, please don’t give us an ISO of a custom virtual machine that we are required to use, and then lock us into an account without admin or sudo privileges. It’s our VM, running on our own computers, with our own data. Wtf. I can’t even install a fucking text editor.8
-
Damn, I'm an idiot.
I was wondering why I could not set up a VM with Arch-Linux for 2 days only to discover now that I stopped the torrent for the ISO at 84%4 -
God virgin media are useless:
Me: “hello how long is left in my contract”
VM: “you have three months left, may I ask why”
Me: “this is now the 3rd day in two weeks I have had no broadband I’m looking to swap to someone more reliable”
VM: “ I’m sorry to hear that I’ll check our system to see what I can do for you”
2 mins on hold
VM: “hello mr day we can offer you a special offer of doubling your internet speed for only £5 a month”
Me: “how does that help with the fact I have no internet”
VM: “well it won’t but we have an engineer looking at the problem and we estimate it will be fixed by 17:05”
Me: “thanks but no thanks, what’s the early exit fee”
😡🤬😡8 -

✔Grails is broken
✔Gradle is broken

Time to create a new VM.5 -
Please Java and all java shit, take more memory I don't need it -_-
16GB doesn't seem to be enough to have a VM and Android Studio Open but it is more than enough to have
1. Visual Studio
2. SQL Server Management Studio
3. VM
4. FireFox
5. Visual Studio code
Fuck. This. Shit!20 -
Setting up a server in Amazon ec2. Running all the commands to install nginx and everything.
Only to realize I have been running those commands in my local VM instead of ssh.2 -
This is my Research Purpose VM, It had been lying around unused for too long.
P.S. I know my specs suck actually3 -
That bitch....
- Run a Win10 in a VM
- Have >20GB of free space on host
- W10 decides to download updates
- your host OS runs out of free space
- VM gets paused due to lack of free space
20GB for an update.. seriously..
seriously...
I mean..
Seriously....
ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME????

I have a Kali Linux VM running on my Windows machine. I decide to try and exploit the Windows machine (THAT THE VM WAS RUNNING ON) because of a vulnerability with smb that requires NO user interaction. I decided to make my computer shoot its own legs and I thought "Hey, this is gonna be fine."
Aaaaand the whole system crashed on me.3 -
Dear Developers at Microsoft,
Why the FUCK does windows try to update EVERY TIME I boot my VM even though it fails EVERY FUCKING TIME? Can't it fucking learn that it's fucking broken and doesn't work? No? OK...7 -
Inception.
Today I needed to check something in a remote server: this was the easiest way:
1: teamviewer to my home pc from university
2: started a vm on that machine with vpn connection to my work office
3: rdp to a windows server vm
4: ssh to a vm on our hosting cluster
5: from there, ssh to the server that I needed access to7 -
DON'T SUDO WHEN DRUNK

// LEARN TO READ, FOR FUCKS SAKE
I've been working with a teacher developing a web application for some business that rents stuff.
Long story short, he's so damn incompetent! I mean, for fucks sake, he sent me this picture asking me "what to do"... dude, just fucking read, it says that the VM will capture input and to escape just press right control!!!
I can't believe this guy is a CompSci Engineer...15 -

Dev: It shouldn't matter my VM is not working.

Just installed Visual Studio and Sql Server for a project on a Windows VM. Thought I'd feel comfortable as I started proper development in .NET.
I fucking hate Visual Studio and SQL Server now. The whole setup, Windows, VS, everything just feels horrible, slow, and takes ages to set up to the point you can use it.18 -

Okay, help :(
Trying to get my dns server in php to work from the outside (it's on a vm on one of my dedi's) but it's not working.
- Port forwarding works well: confirmed.
- Connection type: UDP; confirmed.
- I *can* dig from the host (dedicated server) to the vm.
- nmap scans show an open port.
The exact same happens on my local network.
I'm lost.13 -
Juste before the smartphone explosion (~2008), I was working on a virtual machine for Windows Mobile, Symbian, Android 1.0, and basically every feature-phone of the time.
The VM (coded on good ol' C) would interpret a bunch of HTML, JS, CSS files (more or less like a browser) to run some tiny widgets above the phone's UI, basically allowing us to make multi-platform, custom UIs for low-end phones.
Everything was coded from scratch (except the JS engine which was a fork of SpiderMonkey), the VM could run multiple instances of itself, took around ~2MB of RAM to run (the exe contained everything in 1MB).
Oh, and we were a team of 3 beginner developers.
Fun times, no sleep times ❤️
EDIT: wow, the website is still alive O_o http://viamobility.com/4 -
Customised my Ubuntu VM using
I3wm, polybar, Compton, conky, rofi,
And zsh shell !
The theme is inspired by unixporn subreddit post!
Btw it took 4days completely to do9 -
I booted up the biggest windows VM azure could have and posted this on facebook saying something like "it's about time i make an upgrade"10

Screw League of Legends incompetent devs. They implemented a anti cheat solution that prohibits linux (wine) and VM users to play the game. This is really stupid. Better learn to play dota now...14

Closing the minecraft server for a little while!
I'll be adding mods, writing up a perms file, and hosting the pack on git! I'll post a rant with the repo link.
One of our lovely ranters offered a VM to host the server on, so the ip is probably gonna change as well! (i also gotta make an arch bootable USB, and running the server would slow that down lol)
i'll notify you all once it's donevia a rant, like i said. until then, formulate plans, and suggest some developer-related mods for me to add in! (must be 1.7.10)
Currently planned mods are:
- ComputerCraft
- Applied Energistics
- Buildcraft
- Project Red
and a few from whatever you guys suggest. see you then!

That moment when you set up a VM with a dynamic storage size, install stuff, randomly look at the host OS, and notice there's only 23 MB remaining. Fuuuuck 😲3

Motherfuckin fuckidy duck fuck!
I am so done with Azure for today!
After I ran out of space on a secondary drive I shut the VM down and increased said drive and now after starting it (which takes way too long already) I can't ssh into it: "Connection refused". Diagnostics say "everything is fine bruh" and now I'm stuck with an inaccessible VM which I already spent half the night on configuring and downloading 60gb of sources.. aaargh!7 -
Didn't understand the movie inception?

Fucking brilliant. Paused my Ubuntu VM in VMWare. Unpaused it, the whole file system is corrupted.
There goes my 2 hours of customization. Lesson learned.5 -
Having one of those days where the code works on the development VM but not on the production box.... FML

So Android Studio + Ubuntu VM = 16GB RAM are not enough, but how about Android Studio INSIDE Ubuntu VM, that will teach that bitch to stick to 4GB RAM usage!2

Let's play "Count the operating systems in my household"! I'll start:
- Windows 10 Pro on 1tb drive in desktop

- Ubuntu 18 VM on desktop
- Ubuntu WSL on desktop
- Ubuntu 18 on seconds drive in desktop
- Manjaro on Cheap laptop
- Manjaro on old, expensive laptop
- Windows 10 Pro on new expensive laptop
- Windows 10 Enterprise VM on new expensive laptop
Just realized I have no dual booters :o17 -
Man I love VM's!
I'm on a very tight deadline and my laptop died this morning and needs a reformat, usually this would be a very dire situation... Luckily I use a virtual machine for my dev env so I just remoted into a pc at my office using my phone, launched an instance of my vm and forwarded a public IP to it.
I'm currently working on my rasberry pi while machines installing linux. The only noticeable difference so far is that I only have enough ram to keep open around 5 browser tabs. :-D4 -
He shutdown the server went home thinking it was his VM. Didn't take a second look at what happened.

Just spent like 2 hours theming my Ubuntu 17.10 development VM, but lets be honest, the suru icon back with a unity8 gnome theme does look really fucking good!6

Can you believe the website of my university only works on IE?
I have installed Windows XP on vm ware just to check the website on my MacBook.4 -
I'm migrating data from an old software to a new one I wrote.
Old database it's in Access (yeah, fuck). When I opened one table, the VM hung up and I opened the task manager on MADE

How could this happen to me
I made my mistakes
I’ve got no where to run
The night goes on

Running code in a JVM ... which is a virtual machine...
Inside a VM that runs Linux...
Inside a host OS that runs on native...which runs on a CISC processor... that internally runs a RISC architecture... so that makes the CISC a VM...
The RISC architecture I am pretty sure runs on Elf Magic... I am fairly certain Turing was an Elf working for Santa...
So I am really running my code on VM Elf Magic9 -
Finally dumped windows from my tower/gaming rig!!!
I'm now running Ubuntu Budgie and Windows 10 inside a qemu/kvm VM with gpu passthrough. That way I have almost-native performance and no additional setup effort for installing games.7 -
Booted up my Windows VM today. I was nearly able to read an email before this happened.
Some things never change...4 -
Forced to code inside a virtualized Windows 7 (with a cracked version of VMWare) on a PC with a standard HDD, 4GB RAM and Windows 10 as host. Boss: "because if the computer broke, we reinstall the VM image in just a second!". The VM image was 4 years old.4

Pipeline time!
Ubuntu: 100% tests, 367/367 tests succeed
MacOS: 93% tests, 330/367 tests succeed
Windows: 71%, 285/367 tests succeed
Time to boot up a windows vm...
(these numbers are not accurate)5 -
VMs.....You always have to install Google chrome... Can't OSs just include it in the installation? No Microsoft is forcing you to use Edge and Internet Explorer6

Our documentation is currently stored in a VM image after the host died, meaning we have no access to anything - good times!5

One of my colleges complained that the remote vm he uses to test his Java-Code is so slow that he thinks it's actually just a potatoe.
I said to him... Well you know... 3 Billion Devices run Java.2 -
Installing arch on VM of hyper-v,
Everything was working as expected.
But can't scroll at the end, commands entered are going below monitor output, need to use everytime "clear".
Thanks Windows, maybe it's feature🤔16 -
I am getting really tired of companies who think they are "doing the DevOps" because they have a VM in AWS
-
>Client complains about a 30 minute downtime around midnight
>Client also pays only for a single VM on a HV that they don't even own themselves
>Replies with an offer of how to make the setup more resilient, going from 1 VM to 2 LBs/FE loadbalanced through BGP, and distributing traffic through HaProxy onto 2 BE machines that in turn talk to a Postgres Cluster with RepMgr for dynamic failover.
>No reply so far
Hmmm :^)5 -
Can any dev's recommend a good windows emulation program that supports x64 applications?
Really want to be able to run Gamemaker studio 2 on Linux but would rather not install a fully fledged VM.
I'm willing to work with a VM but just rather not have a 12GB installation for a 256MB program...39 -
So flashing microcontrollers gets kinda annoying when you have to simultaneously fight Windows defender's urge to flag the flashing software as Trojan every 30 seconds like a 10 year old kid with ADHD that just discovered coffee.
It doesn't get easier when suddenly only one of three USB ports recognises thumb drives with the current Windows version, and only after two reboots.
Maybe I should just run it in a VM like the three remaining QA testers at Microsoft do, but on the other hand I don't really like the idea of flashing firmware from a VM. Just feels even dirtier.19 -
The Windows Phone Anniversary Update emulators don't fucking work as alwasy, so I have to debug my app on a VM with that version of Windows 10... fml 🙃2

So now i have Linux installed everything is better than Windows but i want to program in c#... Should i use a VM or a Dual Boot with Windows and KDE Neon?15

So we work on a Vmware network. And besides the terrible network lag. The specs of that VM is one core (Possibly one thread of a xeon core) and 3 GB RAM.
What do we do on it?
Develop heavy ass java GUI applications on eclipse. It lags in every fucking task. Can't even use latest versions of browsers because the VM is a fucking snail ass piece of shit!
So, in the team meeting I proposed to my manager, Hey our productivity is down because of this POS VM. Please raise the specs!.
He said mere words won't help. He needs proof.
Oh, you need proof ? Sure. I coded up a script that all of my team ran for a week. That generates a CSV with CPU usage, mem left, time - every 10 min. I use this data to show some motherfucking Graphs because apparently all they understand is graphs and shit.
So there you go. Have your proof! Now give me the specs I need to fucking work!3 -
Unexpected downside to using a Windows VM for dev related work : once my Windows host (finally) finished updating, I powered on the VM...and that started updating too. FML :/
-
Let's take this on-site, single-tenant, heavyweight ASP.Net app, and start offering it "in the cloud"... by provisioning an entire 4GB Windows Server VM with SQL Server for every single customer.2

New malware on the lose.
It encrypts your files.
But with a twist, it unlocks it again if you spread the malware to friends.
Maybe run it in a vm to get the key to unlock your files might work...2 -
I have unspent credits in Azure that waste each month. To not waste them I spun up a VM to run cookie clicker on it.

Not owning a mac really does make mac exports really hard to test when you can only run a VM with 128MB of VRAM...
Who would have thought!14 -
Currently working in a virtual Linux machine running on a Windows host. The Linux VM is running i3 and I just locked the host for the umpteenth time because my dumbass pressed Win-L to switch one Window to the right...
Also, while typing out the tags, I got the tag-suggestion 'my password is as weak as my mental state' 😂 -
!rant
I started learning to use Hadoop recently, and am running a VM with all I need installed on it (the HDF Sandbox to be exact). The VM wants 8GB to run and my laptop only has just that, except it also needs to run Windows at the same time...
At first I thought I was screwed, that I'd need a more capable computer to learn. I gave it a shot anyway, and told VirtualBox to give the VM 4GB, hoping the VM itself would use RAM swap to function. And it did!
What I didn't expect was Windows not slowing down even a bit. Turns out Windows can triple the computer's RAM with virtual memory that it keeps on disk.
So the bottom line is: my VM is using 4GB as if it was 8GB, and at the moment my Windows is using 8GB as if they were 14GB. All of this without breaking a sweat. The more you know!3 -
So following a previous rant, I’ve decided to make the jump and move full time to a Linux setup on my PC, with a windows VM (I do much more Ruby and php at home than Windows stuff, so makes sense to use Linux as everyday os.
The question that I need help with is which distro to go with.
I have experience with Ubuntu, OpenSuSE, and Debian, but I’m not adverse to trying something new, I’m even toying with the idea of Arch (but with a few test runs on a vm first)6 -
When you're developing it's very well advised to run your software locally in an environment as much as possible matching the real environment.
So for example, if you're running linux on production then you also run it locally to run your code.
Here's where people need to shut the fuck up:
No, mac is not good for linux development. Not unless portability is already a concern that you have and even then it might be counter productive. So many times when people say this, portability isn't not a concern. What runs on servers is up to them.
If your servers are going to be centos, then you develop with centos. Not with debian, gentoo, ubuntu, maxosx, etc.
Even different linux distros are a headache for portability when it's just to support a few desktops for development so don't think that macosx is going to cut it. It might not be as radical a difference as between windows and linux traditionally is but it's still not good for "linux" development. I don't think people making that statement really know what linux is now how different distributions work.
What you use for your graphical operating system doesn't matter to much but when you run your code then there's a simple solution.
Another thing people need to shut up about. It's not docker, unless you're already in Linux where docker is one of many options such as chroot or lxc.
This question always comes up, how do you developer for linux in windows? No it's not docker it's virtual machine.
It's that simple. You download the ISO for the distro you want and then install it on a VM. What does docker for windows do? It runs a linux VM that runs docker.
This may come as a great shock to developers around the world but it is possible to run linux in a VM and then any linux application your want including docker.
Another option is to shove a box in the corner, install what you need on it, share the file system and have people use that to run their code. It really is that easy.6 -
I'm pretty sure istockphoto is mining bitcoin! Visited that website twice and the damn VM started freezing and CPU usage went up to 70% ....2
-
I’m just in love with Docker.
My enterprise finally accept to give it a try.
NB : We have tons and tons of VM for nothing.4 -
If wannacry only attacked the win10 which were not updated, what happens when you run a Linux VM inside that ?
Will it get infected as well ?8 -
That time after you changed to Linux and you really need windows...
Trying to root my new server :( Don't know why can only use USB1 on my VirtualBox VM... Fuck man26 -
Microsoft and their dev tools...
> Trying to login to Azure VM
> Get an error, saying that password needs to be changed before logging in the first time
> Head over to Azure portal, try resetting password
> Password reset is not successful. Reason: Account already exists (???)
> Google the error message. Found solution (coming from a Microsoft employee!): Create a new user, login with that, fix the password for user #1 inside the VM, then delete the new user
What's wrong with these people? 😂3 -
After 3.5 terms, I still see people running Linux in a vm && writing C code in nano.
Should I be concerned if that really freaks me out?
Usually I'd say use whatever floats your boat but I just don't get why they don't dual boot, they'll need Linux in pretty much every term...16 -
So I think I saw a post on here about dvds in virtual machines. Got me thinking, and here's my results trying to play a dvd using linux running inside a vm.
Setup:
Windows 10 Professional
Hyper-V VM running Debian 4.19
Xming website release for video (also works with the free version)
PulseAudio for windows to play sound
So, pretty straightforward, right? Insert DVD, tell Hyper-V to map the dvd drive to the virtual one and run `vlc dvd:///dev/sr0'
But of course, DVDs have copy protection (read: playback protection), so I downloaded the dvdcss package file from videolan's ftp server and installed it. This still didn't work though, vlc said it couldn't decode the dvd. Then, to make sure my dvd was okay I played it with vlc in windows, which worked fine. When I tried again inside the vm it suddenly "worked". Maybe running it inside of a vm prevents some access to the dvd drive required for decoding? Go figure.
The video was very corrupted though, and vlc puked out a lot of errors.
So in conclusion, playing a dvd in a vm is weird, unwatchable, inefficient and only works if you can also play it on the host.
And yes the audio is just as choppy as the video, no idea what causes this. I can play normal videos fine (for some reason that doesn't really work with the free version of xming) although it uses about 200% cpu since there's no hardware acceleration, and the framerate isn't necessarily what it is supposed to be.7 -
Man, I love i3wm/Xfce but I miss the flashiness of KDE. I think I'll try out KDE Neon in a vm and mull over the week if I should switch back...

WOW! Firefox you are worse than Chrome! From 10GB used memory down to 3GB when you are closed :|
(had a VM taking some of the memory, closing it made memory go down to 10GB from 14GB used)8 -
Company uses legacy "Web app" which only runs on an old version of Internet explorer. CTO told us to use a Windows VM since we have mac to run it. All for a website..... Ahhhh4

I’m excited because VM based languages such as Java are no longer in their prime on desktop and server and languages which compile directly to machine code (Go, Rust, Swift…) are finding a broader audience12

I soo want to use Linux (maybe Arch) on my main desktop but I got some programs like FL Studio which only run on Windows.
A Windows VM feels so not snappy :(7 -
DevOps is when the IT forces you to download Citrix on your Mac to login to a Windows VM where portable Putty is copied to the Desktop and the password login to your requested headless Ubuntu VM is in a text file on the mounted network drive.7

We have a bunch of legacy applications that runs on Windows only. I'm pretty much the only dev here who doesn't use a Windows machine.
In order to run those applications, I need use remote desktop to a Windows VM.
I use a Mac. And I use a lot of keyboard shortcuts. Case in point, CMD + L to go to the address bar in the browser.
This happens every time when I need to access those applications.
me: *remote desktop to the VM
me: "oh I need to get to the index/landing page"
me: *CMD + L
VM: "I'm locked now"8 -
There was this time I had to help a friend of a friend. He was like "Hey, can you help me with some server stuff."

It's a fucking shame computed goto didn't make it into the C standard.
It's by far my favorite non-standard feature of C. Writing this VM would suck without it.17 -

I would imagine on a good vm or compiler this would be optimized anyway. So does it really matter?14 -
Developing solely on a VM sucks big time. To last the month with my credits I use a crappy 2 core machine. Atleast half a day every week is spent browsing my phone while waiting for the vm to respond 😣 (right now)2

Hey guys, I've decided to remove windows (again) and want to install a distro in its place, can you suggest some?
I'm learning pen testing so Kali is something I used to use on VM, also Ubuntu for random stuff.11 -

My Ubuntu VM just work fine for consecutive 217 days without restarting.
Need to change some config
And... I forgot the application access key... Damnit!!!
Lucky, I kept the access key in the password manager. Whew.5 -
Can someone please tell my why the fuck Windows would need 1.2 gigs of video memory? For fucks sake this is in a VM there's nothing on here but RDR211

- Fire up Windows VM
- Wait through the nightmare of installing all the updates
- Fire up Edge
- Go to slack.com
- "your browser is not supported. Download a supported browser or use the Slack app"
yupp.. Windows browser is still the best for downloading Chrome6 -
Well today ended in a bang! Had a typo in a dd command and nuked my entire work VM. Last VM backup august 2020. Time to retrace the entire work environment for a year. Not much work was lost thou as most of it was already pushed.2

How I learned to program:
My father installed a DOS VM on my eMac when I was 7 and started learning in QBASIC. In my opinion, it's still one of the best ways to get started with programming due to its simplicity. -
Woke up yesterday to find the OS drive failed in my hypervisor.
24 hours later and amazon prime have delivered a new SSD to get back on track.
Thank god for backups, probably going to setup HA now aswell, but great end to a week :(7 -
Trying to setup a ltsp server for fun. Neve done server things before.
The server and the thin client are in VMs. So I start, install openssh, and them when I try to ssh... WHY CAN’T I FUCKING CONNECT, I CHECKED THE IP WITH IFCONFIG, oh shit, forgot to configure the vm network... so ssh works! Then I setup dhcp (I really don’t know what I’m doing, just following the tutorial), the ltsp configs thing, build the client image and then, I HAVE NO FUCKING INTERNET CONNECTION. Continues, boot up the thin client... WHY CAN’T YPU FUCKING FIND THE SERVER!! Then I realise the vm is not an ubuntu one, so delete it and make a new one... WHY DOES IT STILL DOESN’T WORK!!!!!! Oh wait forgot to connect to the network! Goes to put the network adaptor, and: wait! I don’t need NAT! So I replace the NAT by the correct network, and: Wait it lets me choose the weird thingy intel/pce thingy, oh I remember now! It said we needed the “...III FAST...”! Activate it and... IT WORKS ! !!!! CONNECTS TO THE SERVER!!! GOT THE DHCP!!! WAIT!!!!! What is THAT 🤬 TFTP LOADING THING!!!:
TFTP open timeout

My Windows 10 VM gloriously just shat itself so badly, it's now stuck in a BSOD bootloop (first time ever I managed to get a BSOD in a fucking virtual machine btw) and I need to reinstall it. So I need to download the newest Win10.iso.
But I'm also currently working on a university assignment that requires me to be connected to the university-network via a VPN that's slower than my 90s ADSL connection (~1Mbps) (see my previous rant). So to download the 4.7GB iso it'd take.... I'm bad at maths, so let's just say fucking AGES.
So I spin up another VM with a bridged network to download my Win10.iso with Gigabit speed to set up another VM.... wonders of modern technology -
We're hiring managers and engineers at a remote site, and the recruiter is setting up calls with skype for business. To use this-- even the web version, I have to run windows, so I had to dust off my windows VM to join. I fire up the VM, called "plague" in virsh, and...
Boom! An hour of updates and a half dozen reboots! And people wonder why windows is dying.11 -

Anyone develop in virtual environment here?
How was your experience?
Mine has been pretty horrendous.

Why Virtual Box is so laggy on Mac?
I gave it maximum resources and it's just sucks. On windows however Virtual Box is so fly...
Does anyone have any free virtualization solution for Mac (I'm trying to run Linux VMs)5 -
Scrolling through and was reminded of something I despise - Windows Update. It always decides to strike while I'm on a tea break and I can't postpone it.
The amount of VM corruption I've had to deal with is ridiculous.5 -
Don't you hate it when you have too many GB or RAM occupied and then you decide to launch a VM without realizing that Virtualbox will not only take the remaining space left but will also cap your RAM and everything freezes!? Uugghhh!4
-
Only took 20 minutes to setup a Debian vm and get the satisfactory game server running in docker. And most of that was waiting. I feel so smart 🤓 compared to even just last year when I was googling basic commands linux commands8

Fucking Vagrant... I know you prefer a Linux environment but pleeeaaase why does your VM always timeout?!?! Godamnit, it's a bad sign if you get bugs before you even start coding...2

Logged into the vm as root. Saw that there were some security updates pending. Ran apt-get upgrade. Lost all ssh access to the vm. FML6

How to install windows, when there is no network boot support, no USB and you are on Linux?
I did it through vmware, just ran using the current hdd.2 -
Working from home via RDP. The lag kills me at times, you delete something, nothing happens and suddenly it's all gone. It's like I'm communicating in outer space with a super slow response time! Arrghhh!4

To the sysadmins:
We are currently installing and configuring dns, dhcp, smb, ftp and webserver on Ubuntu vms in class.
The teacher changed his mind and want us to install a system that has everything installed and configured.
He recommended Zentyal to us.
What would you use and why would you use it?4 -
That sadness when you cannot figure out reproduce the performance of a program and the VM won't cooperate :(

Why are many people talking about VM? Like I couldn't get if you're using it instead of dual booting or it's something else going on in the hind side.....11

Yesterday: Enjoying my VFIO machine running on Ubuntu. Windows nastiness confined to a VM, full performance graphics. Heaven.
Today: Take a system update. Systemd hanging on boot. No console output because systemd helpfully prevents all that from showing. AARGH!1 -
I hope my boss learned his lesson: dd if=/dev/zero of=[hdd storing DB about VM cluster]

Today I spent 2.5h missing a flag in pdfLaTeX just because I forgot I am working on a different machine with different settings. #FML
I should have a central VM server!1 -
As we all know we have Apple, MS and linux fanboys & girls here. I myself am strongly MS oriented however I like and use Linux too. I have never tried running a virtualized Win10 pro on Linux though. Anyone ever did that? And if so, what did you use to get it working and did it work well? Since my last 2 clients I always work on a VM so that I have a windows VM specifically setup for my client so their config and apps don't mess with my personal dev needs. So I curently run Win10 pro inside hyper v vm on win10 pro. I'd like to experiment and run win 10 pro vm on linux so any suggestions etc are highly appreciated.11

I finally gave up with windows (especially 10)
Used to be behind it and support it but the last bunch of updates is causing more of a headache and dont get me started on the "oh you disabled automatic rebooting..... going to reboot anyway and give you a 10 minute warning while you are asleep".
How bad did it get?
I have built a plan for my linux install that will allow me to play most games via linux (thansk wine and DX2VC) and as i love playing Sea of Thieves, got a few things set up so that when i start the windows vm, it will unload my gpu, give it to the vm. when i shut the vm down, it will reload it back into linux (thanks to joeknock90 if hes on here)
Tested this with my laptop with an external crappy GPU and works surprisingly well

and yes Linus's vid also gave me a little push as well6 -
Updates! (( ༎ຶ‿༎ຶ ))
Why do they break things..
After updating my system my VMs suddenly stopped working, all of them. They didn't crash or anthing but became unsuable, stuff like force logouts..
Almost lost it, but thankfully there was a difference in the snap version and the deb package..
At first that also didn't want to work, but it was just that the snap wasn't completely removed so it had some problems..
Now thankfully it *seems* to work again.

Someone needs to explain these android terminal emulators to me.
As a kid I had something like it installed on my android 4 back in the days, too. And I was facinated by it and always thought yup, thats linux running right before my eyes.
Now I'm thinking: wait a sec, so you're telling me thats actually Linux running within this dalvik vm stuff on android? Like - how?
I know android runs on linux but is it really that these terminals access the drives/devices/files of the real linux under it?4 -
Just fired up my Windows 10 VM and it goes ham... there is nothing installed but office.
Why!?
Seriously. If someone can explain to me why this is necessary, I'd greatly appreciate it!
It's 15 minutes past when I've resumed the VM from suspension now and it's still going on like that and it's slow as fuck.
I don't want this to escalate to an OS war. Tastes are different.
As I was writing this: apparently Office is updating itself by default consuming a shitload of system resources while doing so. This is fucked up...4 -
Holy shit, Kotlin does not have package-private?! I thought Kotlin was just a bad mix of JS syntax and Java... but not supporting an essential feature of the VM is on a whole another level of bad.8

I use qemu/KVM on Linux. I love being able to do basically all VM operations with commands. So when I need to use my Windows VM(ie: connect to a WebEx), I pop it on with an integration I wrote for my keyboard launcher(mutate), or just execute an alias over SSH, and connect via VNC. When I'm done, I just shit it down. At this point, Windows has been reduced to just a windowed program that I run.7

Any recommendations for a dev laptop?
Going to be using Visual Studio (yes, yes...) and all that other Microsofty goodness, so it needs to be Windows. Probably need to run a VM or 3 on it too, for legacy stuff.2 -

It’s me or Vim on Windows Terminal is barely usable?
I resorted to doubling my laptop’s ram (luckily Dell still produces laptop which can be upgraded and repaired with a set of common screwdrivers) in order to be able to install a FreeBSD VM in which I can finally get a decent terminal based development environment. Sadly since for my work I need a VPN which can run only on Windows and MacOS I cannot just remove Windows and switch to FreeBSD or Linux but I have to make a VM and route its network traffic through work VPN.11 -
Created a win7 vm for a test in an environment of all of Linux vms. Named it billgates. I'm 99% sure my other vms increased resource load in spite. There is a revolution brewing.

Anyone know of a program that can almost mimic the unity mode of VMware for a Linux host?
Just want to run 1 application on a windows VM and not have the main desktop open but haven't been able to find anything5 -
Yesterday evening I updated Windows 10 on my PC to 1909. Everything was fine, just a quick update.
Today I saw that all my VMs in VMWare Workstation don't work anymore. And they contained all my work for university.
Okay, let's just revert back to 1903. This can't a problem, right?
But Windows decided that it should revert back to 1809, not to 1903.
Also that was my home PC, and I had remote connection.
Yes, now it doesn't work too, because Windows removed Chrome Remote Desktop while reverting.
Thank you, Windows.
Thank you, Workstation.8 -

VMs - VirtualBox or VMware?
IV'e been using VMware v14 cracked, my principal VM is a Linux mint machine, wich one deals better with Linux VMs?
I haven't used Vbox since I found a craked VMware 14 but should stop using it..........
Also, what is the best way to have a prepared to mount VM in a pen drive? Lets say I place my Linux mint machine in my 64Gb pendrive I take everywhere, I want to plug it to any machine (windows most likely) and use it pronto to run the VM instead working in that machine.8 -

Decided to take a AI course bc i felt it was going to be a cool topic and because I have no experience with AI.
I find out on the first day of class that we are using a implementation of Scheme called Scheme Chez Petite.
Scheme is cool and I like using it. I feel like it makes me think in different ways u know.
However, I have a 2015 Macbook air. And a bunch of my classmates have similar Macbooks too.
Our Prof. told us that the only fucking way to run scheme Chez petite locally is through a fucking windows VM.
So now I have to download a fucking 10GB windows OS so I can fucking do my homework.
And, since i have a 2015 Macbook air, everytime I start the VM, my computer sounds like its gunna fucking explode and it absolutely destroys the battery life.
I feel like there is a better way to do this than through the VM. Or maybe not using Scheme Chez Petite and maybe something else? idk8 -
So.....
Cassandra vm had a crash yesterday...
2 nodes with rep factor 1. (FML)
One node wouldnt start... Eventually found out one of the commit replays had an exception (the one at the time of the crash).
Boss trying to push me towards a fix all this time which was:
"Let's delete the vm and have Cassandra running on one vm"
There are not we enough curses in the world.

P.S. there are no backups. -
I fucking killed my hard drive by installing the guest additions in a Windows VM! Everything freezed and crashed suddenly, how the hell is that possible? How can Windows fuck everything up, even in a VM??
(Probably wasn't Windows fault, that makes me even more angry).
This hard drive wasn't even two months, his predecessor died heroically in a tragic magnet incident :(3 -
Spend 1 hour learning to configure networking interfaces via command line on an ubuntu VM for home use.
Can't ping anything.
Double check /etc/network/interfaces, restart box, check loopback interface functions, check physical cabling.
Realize that VM is attached to a separate virtual switch.
Virtual switch is tagged for Vlan 2, connected router is a flat topology.
Face palm. -
I've been trying to push good practices at work, which includes migrating testing environment to vagrant.
Been trying to push it forward for months, and this week, a "genius"co-worker just started complaining we shouldn't overcomplicate and just provision a vm for testing for everyone to use, and boss agrees immediately!
Guess who'll have to maintain it whenever someone remembers to destroy it...5 -
Can anyone recommend a good piece of virtualisation software for mac?

Any tips on staying focused and not being distracted for a quasi-intermediate programmer? I keep getting distracted by steam games. Even weird shit like installing gitlab community on a VM, thus loosing an hour of time.1

I was a bit confused when my supervisor told me to use Windows VM through Vagrant for testing environment. AFAIK each VM should be treated as a single machine, so it requires a Win license.
There are several criterias for us to be able to use Win WM legally.
One of them is Qualified Multitenant Hoster (QMTH) Program from MS, it authorizes qualified 3rd-party hosting service providers to host customers’ Win VM. Other option is to check if we have on-premise dedicated use rights.
I don't know if we fulfill any of the criteria. I don't want to cause any trouble so I am not gonna ask my supervisor about it.4 -
Man i realy need to get of my windows host.
My productivity takes a nosedive whenever im on windows idk why.
I'd love to use linux fully but my fav game Overwatch has shit performance running on linux.
So the best solution would be to pass through my gpu to a windows vm for gaming.
But that would require a new gpu for the host system as the ryzen 7 1700 does not have a gpu.
I dont have any experience with passing thtough gpus. But could i make 2 vms that acces the same gpu, ofc not at the same time. So that i could have a gaming vm and maybe use another linux vm if i wanted to do something which profits off gpu acceleration.11 -
That awkward moment when a virtual drive accidentally gets removed from the vm, system reboots and everything just............ Works

So I had this discussion yesterday..
Virtual Machines on a SSD: Yes or no? Good or Evil?
What's your opinion?
I keep the OS partition of my VMs on my SSD, because they are unusable otherwise. At least if it is a Windows vm.6 -
iCloud it's that thing that if you haven't a Mac you can't download your own app files either in iOS or Windows.. I had to run a VM and search for an hour for 40-50 family photos...5

I'm trying out Linux, first installed Debian, then moved to Ubuntu.
Figured that I'd rather use a vm as my dev machine than mess with my main computer.
Quite nice. Though VirtualBox sometimes messes up.
Anyone have any suggestions for me?6 -
okay I feel dumb for this question but for my next internship I need Linux on a laptop.
I have two options.
1, Current laptop with windows dual boot or vm
2, shitty laptop just to Linux.
help me out guys :-/10 -
I just spent 4 1/2h looking at ILASM, .NET Assemblies and the list of CLI instructions to get some "inspiration" for my own VM
I'd say that's a Sunday morning well spend^^ -
Tested the windows linux subsystem. Thought windows did something good by implementing a complete Linux bash. Then I recognized that they just piped it into the win kernel. Lol they broke it again XD
Next steps are removing windows, burn that m2 ssd in some gasoline, throw the ashes in a deep hole next to my old bootcamp 40GB HDD (Mac OS X) and finally setting up a new fresh and clean system which won't get in touch with any Windows forever.

Work Pc is windows xp.... Dev board requires a Linux tool chain... The PC falls over trying to run a VM, so end up needing to run a VM on our CI server (beefiest bit of kit I have access to) , I have to deal with laggy eclipse, over RDP to the VM. On top of that the dev board comes with around 10k pages of documentation.... Most of which either doesn't work, or is missing vital bits of information.... Oh and PM has promised a working product to customers in less than 3 months l, despite us not actually managing to get the desired platform to even boot correctly yet.... *screams *2

LXC/LXD containers are awesome for Windows VirtualBox users. It would allow creating a single Linux VirtualBox VM and then create multiple LXC containers (full-blown Linux machines) utilizing all the full resources of host Linux VirtualBox VM, keeping it always a clean image. Super efficient utilization of RAM and storage. No need to create multiple VMs for different Linux OSs.2

i5 vs. i7?
My old laptop is dying and I've started to look for a replacement. I am used to have an i7 processor, my dev env consists of either vagrant and a VM or a docker-compose env. Plus I use JetBrains IDE. Mostly I do webdev, so not that much compiling going on, however often I need a VM with Windows to have Photoshop or Illustrator running...
So I guess the question is: Is there a notable difference between an i5 and an i7 for development?4 -
Installing and setting up a toolkit on a VM should not take roughly a week. Why isn't this just an image?!?

Does the login save checkmark not work for anybody else on the web devrant? Like I always have to re-login, tried it on multiple webbrowsers too and even in a fresh VM image.1

Some pigs just don't fly, even with sufficient thrust.
Been struggling for days trying to get my IntelliJ-on-Linux-VM setup running on Windows, and it's abysmally slow. Latencies for the UI are counted in seconds.
Screw it, I'm reinstalling my entire dev stack direct on Windows. I love Linux, but I will not use it when the price is that I cannot get anything done.8 -
Why the heck does everyone thnk it's a good idea to run docker Containers inside a vm?
Or Containers in general...
This is unneeded redundancy and it kills the performance aspect, which makes containers favorable in comparison to vms...3 -
Whats the fucking purpose of our companys dev test and prod env. Dev always only has a single instance. Sometimes clustered services run as cluster on test. Producing headaches because the clustering behaviour couldnt be seen on a single instance and Prod lacks all the nice deployment tools off dev/test. Fuck thinking you could dev then test and prod without any major reconfiguration and headaches. And all because the Storage costs is RETARDEDLY expensive because the backup EVERYTHING with ridiculess overkill. That results in headaches when requesting new servers. Took an old Workstation from the shelves and made it my vm slave so at least i could reliably deploy to test.. Fuck this process
-
I just finished replacing perl's builtin Storable with my own deranged take on it because I wanted to be more efficient about saving and loading snapshots of a VM to disk.
It was a resounding success, of course. But what am I doing with my life? -
Not quite dev-related, but I once had to migrate and replace a Windows Server 2003 Domain (1 DC) to a new Windows Server 2016 Domain Controller. The network consisted of about 30 PCs, 1 DC and 1 DB Server.
Eventhough it worked, I wouldn't do it again... 😰
At the beginning I almost deleted the old Domain Controller VM from the old ESXi host server, before any VM backup existed. Close one... -
Its been awhile since I opened up my Server VM to play around with. Until when I had to login to my DB VMs, I forgot the password. And forgot to save them into my password manager. Whelp, perfect for me to go back to square 1.1

Am I missing something with VMs? Every time I set one up (either linux guest on win10 host or the reverse), what I get is so slow and laggy that I can barely use it. I always give my VMs about 70% of my ram and at least 4 cpu cores, but still, it ends up being as slow as my grandma's 10 year old laptop.
On the other hand, I've seen people on youtube editing fucking videos in their VMs and the performance was so good that you couldn't even tell if its a vm or not.
This happens both on my desktop (8th gen i7, 16GB ram and ssd) and on my laptop (same cpu, 8GB ram, nvme).
Is virtualbox not good enough, are my devices not powerful enough or am I just too stupid?17 -
Just installed DeepinOS in a VM. Holy fuck its gorgeous. Cant get enough of it. Not that fast in a VM, but didn't expect it to be.
Anyone using it? How's the software support and overall experience?2 -
I have set up a VM on Azure as a small build server - nothing fancy yet, just being able to manually build LineageOS. I only spin it up when I need it, so when I do, I can assign quite a beefy machine and that's all fine. But: It needs a lot of hard drive space and the additional data disk needs to be paid 24/7, whether the VM is up or not. As such, it is eating up my (free MSDN) credits. I am not too well versed with Azure yet, so maybe there is a better way.
Does anybody know a cheap way to get a large-ish SSD on Azure? Maybe with ephemeral OS disks, potentially running on another (small) VM in the same network and sharing it? -
Does anyone else have a whole vm with random tools all-possible games like pacman4console or bastet? Or is it just me.

Spent a bunch of time the other day trying to figure out why my system somehow no longer had php-curl extension on it... post investigation i realised my terminal that was open was on my host system rather than the vm i operate in.

is there a particular reason why I loose the Ubuntu (or gnome idk) settings app when I uninstall cheese in my Ubuntu-budgie VM?
cheese is just a webcam program right?1 -
Angular cli was installed globally with some "more up-to-date" version and locally for a project with a slightly older version. On a local machine. No problem.
The same thing on a VM: nope, module not found error. node trying to run a node_modules install script from within windows directory, in which nothing node-related exists ... ?? -

Hey gang,
I'm kind of interested in learning some hacking/virus basics. I wanted to try out some scripts but I'm kind da nervous. Can I run simple viruses on a VM without worrying about my laptop getting infected too? I would think so, but I wanna be sure.
Also, if you have any resources you can point me to, that would be great. Thanks!2 -
What CI CD are you using for work? Ours is a self hosted sub domain jenkins in a VM.
Also, what CI CD is almost required in every job? Jenkins? Thanks!3 -
I was working on a cloud image for about 2 months and wasn't aware of expiration date of image. Now my all work is gone and I don't know how to recover my files.
Will have to do everything again. 😡😣 -
To those using Qubes, has anyone been able to install Windows 10 on a hardware VM and how did it run; BSODs per hour. If you converted a Win10 VirtualBox image to Qubes HVM your input is also valid

VM setup 2 days ago goes down.
Boot the VM up to find there are no configs! It's clean as when it was created...
F#@&+£! FML it's gonna be a long night2 -
After few weeks I got back to an Electron app. Rebuilt the thing, copied fresh binaries to a Win 10 VM, and the app doesn't even start, it instantly crashes. Literally nothing changed - libraries (and their versions) are same, source code is the same, node version is same, it was built on same machine, VM wasn't even started since then.
Tried a fresh Tux binary, and of course it runs fine.
God, I hate Windows. 😩2 -
I'm currently evaluating the best way to have both a linux distro for work and study and windows for gaming on my PC.
I need as little virtualization as possible on both systems (need to do some high performance computing and access hardware counters for uni and that sweet Ultra Raytracing 144 fps for games) and as mich flexibility in quickly switching between both systems (so dual boot isnt ideal too)
I tried WSL2 but had some issues and am currently trying out a Lubuntu VM on my windows host, but maybe someone knows the secret super cool project that magically makes this unrealistic wish work.7 -
what is the best work flow for FPGA based design using vivado tools
1. a i3- 9th gen Linux box running vivado, and i vnc to it using my main computer
Or
2. Or just get a good main machine and run vivado in VM
I am up for 2 days now trying to get vivado up in VM running ubuntu 12.04 /xfce4 it shouldn’t be this hard !!12 -
