I’m getting fucking tired of having this conversation:

Company “we need x”

Me “ok. In order to deliver x I need y”

Company “we can’t do that”

Me “ok. Then can I have y”

Company “nah ah”

Me “what about Q?”

Company “nope”

Me “okay. Well until you decide to provide me with the resourcing needed, this is getting deprioritized”

Company “wait this needs to be top of mind”

Me “okay. Provide me with y, and I’ll deprioritize other work”

Company “wait we also need that other work”

Me “you’re only getting one. Pick which one you want first”

Company “we’ll get back to you”

Me (muttering) “no you won’t”

Company “what?”

Me “what?”

This is so real it makes my chest hurt.

    Anyone else smell burnt toast?

    everything is top priority!

    Sheesh.

And now the VP is a no show for the meeting he called to talk about my resource request.

Ok. So here’s what I’m gonna do: I’m just not going to work on this project. Leadership clearly doesn’t see this as a priority, so I see no reason I need to continue working on it.

Thanks for x it works great and we appreciate your effort but we need one small improvement.

Always the same bs ... It is like some people simply do not know what prioritizing means...

"I want all of it, now!" is like a statement from a stubborn 5 year old.

@magicMirror == equal priority == no priority. It's the first thing we devs need to teach business/management.

I once did as;! Was told. And delivered everything they gave me as priority at once. Everything was over due and 3 of the 14 items where irrelevant by the time they where delivered. After that they wanted to have a conversation.

I think you did the right thing 👍
I follow the same rule: when blocked I announce what I'll br working on instead ubtil furtjer notice and what's required to unblock me.

That makes it someone else's problem and I move on.

    @hjk101 yup.
No need to teach them. Just work on whatever you want - start with the longest.
