Went down the same route and I frickin love test automation. I get my development fix, can work with a lot of different exciting technologies and by now I've pretty much got the right to do what ever I like. At the moment I get paid to develop a test controller using frickin genetic algorithms, which other profession can work on cyber security, ai, web or classic monoliths depending on what ever they'd like to do at the moment? I know testing isn't sexy but that doesn't mean you can't throw some makeup on it and push that bitch to prom queen.
