What is too expensive?
I would say Sager + Linux or Windows. But mine cost about $1700. -
@Demolishun let’s say the basic MacBook Air M1. Still €1200 for a device that would only be used for 4-8 weeks
-
@DangerousMagic I'm assuming by "new apps" you mean "Mac and/or iOS apps"? Otherwise you might as well buy a cheap non-Mac laptop instead.
-
Sorry, but a MacBook is imho overrated piece of crap.
What I really find astonishing and what reminds me of a lot of "parental" talk with interns - how can you decide to rely on a sponsored device?
If you want an job in IT, you need a personal device. At least for backup reasons you should have one.
I don't want to offend you, but - parental advice - never rely on stuff given to you by a 3rd party.
Isn't specific to a laptop, had this discussion e.g. over transportation (car / public transport refund / ...).
A company doesn't do this because they love you.
It's a simple way of making you working there more binding by creating dependencies you get accustomed too.
Same for e.g. in house gym / wellness / restaurant / ...
I'm not saying that you shouldn't enjoy it - but be aware that this a psychological scheme to make you stay.
Always maintain a form of independence from your employer. -
afloofdev312yIt's possible to get a second hand computer for like £80 and develop android apps.
If you can't afford the most pricey options, there are more affordable ones out there. Don't let money stop you! -
@afloofdev on a 80£ pound pc android studio will crash every time and buildjng would take ages. You should invest a little more if using intellij software. But vscode should run safely
Nothing more frustrating than coming up with ideas for new apps in your head but not having a device to develop those apps on because you quit your job of which you used the provided MacBook for personal projects. But buying a new one is too expensive for just a month or two
