Giga comes from the Greek gigas, thus pronouncing it with a hard g is the only correct way. Jija probably comes from a stupid American.

@Forside but Americans pronounce gif as gif and not jif, I just watched 5 or 6 videos and they say it as gif

@sam9669 gif is a made up abbreviation, so I think there is no real standard for its pronunciation, but I settle to 'gif' as well. Also I think the argumentation from the link of @PraveenKishore is quite plausible.

@Forside pretty sure the Greek pronunciation only makes the second 'g' hard. The first 'g' is closer to a 'y' sound.

@wafflesauce It's originally written "γίγας", so both g's originate from gammas, thus I would say the Greek pronounced both as a hard g. Just my assumption tho.

While I wouldn't call it proof, Google translate seems to agree that the first 'g' isn't hard. Though my ear isn't so great at discerning exactly what sound the generated voice is making instead.

There also seems to be quite a difference between classical and modern Greek, and I have no idea if this area of the language was affected by it.
