I have a dual booted laptop with Windows and Ubuntu, I can not for the live of me choose which one to use all the time. They each have their benefits! What do you think?

    Keep using them both? I use macOS, arch Linux, and windows 10 every day.

    @ryanmhoffman interesting, and you've never had the urge to find one system for everything?
  • 7
    Never. I use Linux the majority of the time but they all have strengths and weaknesses. I also use both iPhone and android. Why be a fanboy of just one product right? 😀

    @south by the way welcome to devRant and have some ++

    @ryanmhoffman you're inspiring! I use Windows 10 most of the time, but lately I've been leaning more and more towards Linux. To me Unix is much easier to use, but Mac is not reachable for me

    @ryanmhoffman thank you!!

    @south Mac is expensive but it's unix based so it's honestly easy to develop with. (Excluding Xcode. Worst piece of software ever written, even worse than internet explorer.)

    @ryanmhoffman I'll definitely keep that in mind then! I might get a smaller laptop at some point and only put a Linux distro on it.

    @ryanmhoffman that seems harsh, what do you like about Xcode?

    I use Windows 10 most of the time, but I plan to install Linux again when I have some free time.

    Use the best of each of them! :)

    @bracketslash I honestly can't think of one good thing to say about it. UI/UX is bad, it lags horribly and causes random crashes and errors on every machine I've used it on plus for many devranters. It has a terrible debugger. The project setup is annoying and not configurable. No good vim mode. No real dark theme, yes the editor can change color but the ide is still white. Did I mention the crashes already?

    That probably could have been it's own rant.

    @ryanmhoffman now I'm interested to see what good you have to say about IE 😉
  • 2
    @bracketslash haha this will be interesting, either the old IE or edge, both just don't work for me at all

    @bracketslash haha that's a tough one. IE doesn't crash my computer so it wins.

    @south nice avatar!

    @ryanmhoffman thanks I tried! Edge is quick, but the development tools are a joke and it feels like the resolution is too low. Like it's made for a tablet and they couldn't be bothered to make something for laptops and desktops

    When I had my laptop dual-booted I found myself preferring Linux for development and only used Windows for games or .NET

    @Krokoklemme that's kind of where I am! Linux for any development purposes and windows for entertainment like Netflix and Spotify. This is one of the reasons I had Linux as a virtual machine for the longest time. So I could use both at the same time

    @south But you can have both Spotify and Netflix on Linux

    Messed up my windows while using VMware on Ubuntu to run kali. Now only Ubuntu works. Windows doesn't boot up. It says insert windows cd and start repair. I can't play games now... 😩

    I have a dual boot system as well, but about 99% of the time I'm in Linux and do my programming in a virtual machine. So far that has worked well and being a student the applications are not that resource intensive.

    Windows -> games
    Linux -> life

    Try commodore 64. It's amazing.

    If you aren't too picky about games, there are enough great games for linux too.
    The only reason I've booted windows in the past 5 months was too run Keil. But even that changed as I recently managed to transfer the project to CLion and a few other nifty tools.

    I use windows as my main operating system and if I have to do some linux stuff I use the windows subsystem for linux ... works great IMHO! For me there is absolutely no need for dual boot as long as you don't want to use some fancy tiling WM ... if you only need and use some linux shell like bash or zsh this is the best option in my opinion!

    @mak420 this seems like something to look at! Thanks for pointing that out!

    Arch is amazing, it can do whatever you need it to.

    @matsaki95 you could make a program in Arch that when installed on a toaster or setup with an Arduino could make toast.

    @tylermisok I've used it before, it was pretty great. The only motivation for me was that I have Ubuntu running on all my servers and having an Ubuntu desktop makes the development easier
