jchw11028yWell, I'd definitely argue Qemu is a lot better than Virtualbox, though VMware is great. The thing to consider here is that there's more at play than just user experience. The primary use of Qemu+KVM on Linux is to provide VPS and hypervisor services on multi tenant servers. It's definitely rock solid stable with great CPU, disk, and network performance.
But GNOME Boxes and SPICE are still quite immature, and are way newer than any other VM frontend to my knowledge. They do not handle Windows very well, at least from the UX point of view. For this kind of consumer oriented VM stuff, I believe VMware > Virtualbox > Qemu.
I think that will change someday. I think KVM has potential to provide the best possible UX for Linux VMs and will do so without needing to finagle with kernel modules that are often out of date, and in Vbox's case, so bad that the Linux kernel developers refuse to debug crashes from machines that are running it. -
@jchw well I do have hopes on KVM+QEMU, they do live up to their reputation when it comes to emulating Linux based operating systems, I was just disappointed in its support for other kernel based operating systems like Windows. Nevertheless, I was just frustrated cause of the lost time installing stupid windows

@TheAnimatrix
Qemu+kvm is rock solid on server, great performance and stability.
I have it serving both Windows server and workstation, besides Linux servers.
What are your complaints? Never used spice or anything X based so I have no idea.
Only use virtlib utilities to manage them.
They work great using rdp, try different virtual graphics cards or do pass-through if you adventurous. -
You guys seem pretty Linux'ish, me and a few devranters are in a linux/open source group chat since a few days, if you'd like to join, gimme a shout!
-
@nbamaral I tried using virtwin, it improved though I wouldn't call it the best
-
@TheAnimatrix Oh nicy! You'd have to register at riot.im and give me your username AND install a normal client because the web one fucks up the key exchanges big time
-
@TheAnimatrix Give me a second and remember what i said about the browser / client haha!
-
@TheAnimatrix Can you use a desktop client? There's an electron one I'm using which works great! Also the android app works well
-
@TheAnimatrix You can maybe click the warning things but the web client fucks up a lot
-
@TheAnimatrix tap the warning slash red thingies, verify the things and tap send anyways!
-
it also works very nice vice versa. also try run macos if you have i5/i7 and ssd. (will really enjoy wtf os ever).
-
Hi @linuxxx can you also send me invite to linux open source group chat? I would really like to participate 😊 Username:RokKos
Thanks in advance 👍 -
@TheAnimatrix yes, google for "macos on vmware"... need to download custom vm with auto install to its included hard drive
-
@MaxDeepfield well I gave it a shot and it didn't work as well as Windows does on VMware. I'll probably dual boot into Windows and use VM ware on windows and install OS X.. Maybe that will help
-
@TheAnimatrix maybe on windows it works better, it is true i never did vm inside linux host
I pulled it off! VMware on Linux is pretty rad! What you see in the pic is windows on my right monitor and Fedora on the left, Fedora serving as the host though.
They work seamlessly! (no lag at ALL)
Mind blown..
