My respect for anyone goes up 10x when they mention that they have been a freelancer dev their entire career so far.

Partly because I tried freelancing early on, and I felt ashamed of asking money from clients over and over (they never made on-time payments) and that was the factor that made me jump onto a full-time job for companies.
