devios157707yA year or so ago I discovered to my horror that this is how my mom was "shutting down" her iMac every night.
No wonder the thing would have a conniption fit every time you turned it on. The thing was probably doing a file system check on every boot!
Needless to say I corrected her, but geez I don't even know where she learned how to do that! -
@boom if you click it, it generally puts it to sleep or prompts you for how you want to power down. The default for holding it just cuts the power

devios157707y@boom On PCs, yes that's true. On Macs hitting the power button once actually just puts the machine to sleep. You need to shut down via the UI if you want to properly shut down. Holding the power button down, however, does the same thing for both platforms. :)

devios157707y@maltedMilk Reminds me of way back in the day, we had a really old Mac and shutting down would end with a message on the screen "You can now safely turn off your Mac" or some such. It always made me think "why, is it dangerous??".
Of course it meant "it is now safe to" but I took it to mean "be careful!" 😄
Turning off your pc by holding down the power button is like putting yourself to sleep every night by shooting yourself in the face with a tranquilizer gun
