Unless you put Gnome on it and expect it to work properly with wayland.
But otherwise, there are tons of desktop environments and customizations for it. It shouldn't matter which distribution you're using. -

When you do a fresh install of Ubuntu you get that awful purple unity. On the other hand when you install Arch you get that beautiful slick minimalistic design command line

Both unity and gnome waste so much space with their big-bars-of-stuff, especially the ones with big bars of stuff that doesn't cover the entire vertical or horizontal space. -
@brahn hence why you can hide it. Just like you can hide windows big "waste of space" bar.

I installed KDE Plasma 5 Desktop environment on Ubuntu 17.04. And tweaked the theme to look like material design. π Now my friends who are using Windows 10 are jealous of it.
