Today I am going to install Ubuntu on my girlfriend's computer as she want to start learning basics of Linux. Any other distro recommendations for a noob in Linux?

Maybe try with Mint, xfce is a really nice Desktop environment. IMO Unity is too limiting and all that Amazon stuff is not something I really like the idea of. Unity makes Linux seem like something quite limiting for a beginner IMO.

@ewpratten That's how I did it and I always amaze myself with the things I learn. Definitely a fitting analogy though!

Although now I'm running literally all of my webapps on it, which can sometimes be... frustrating. Plex was interesting.

Doesn't Ubuntu use gnome now instead of unity?

Maybe elementaryOS because its both good for beginners and for long timers

Manjaro. Like arch easy mode

Try DEEPIN very easy, mac like interface

@Crayons no problem. Also the arch wiki is almost 99% applicable with manjaro and arch wiki is probably the best one as it's so comprehensive. Anyways good luck

@crayons what hardware are you installing it on?

CPU: Intel i3 RAM: 4gb
It's a very basic 2015 Lenovo laptop.

@crayons Just be careful with the WiFi card - I tried Manjaro like 2 months ago, and my WiFi card didn't work... Fixable, but some effort required.

But the good part is it uses KDE plasma which is epic.

@simo002m I totally agree with you. I am not a fan of unity myself. All those bloatwares are useless. A good Linux (user-friendly) distro should give you clean and light interface without desperate need to be like windows or Mac. Beginners should get a new experience rather than keeping them in their comfort zone.

@jajoosam Yeah I use to have WiFi card problems even with Ubuntu back in like 2010. Thanks for the suggestion mate. :)
