    Do you mean to turn off your modem or to hack into major internet providers and turn off the internet for everyone?

    Halt the earth, put out the sun, implode the whole universe into its pre-big bang state. It's an idea. A bad idea.

    @TerriToniAX
    This time yes, not even taking a laptop just my phone to check the news :)
  • 1
    @nbamaral Sounds wise. But wait, how do you check the news on your phone if there's no internet?
  • 2
    @TerriToniAX Cable. A long one. To some big news companies.

    @BambuSource Now, that's a great idea. It can double as breadcrumbs. If you get lost, just wind your way back to civilization :D

    @BambuSource I came up with a name for it, world wide ethernet

    I'm guessing you're asking about disabling the Internet for everyone, which would quickly and easily throw the world into such chaos, it would be considered an act of international terrorism and you would be hunted down extremely quickly. I'm not sure who would get to you first: your government, or your nextdoor neighbor who was in the middle of a Warcraft raid. Either way, you would not get away with this without a VERY good reason.

    Let's start with the most extreme solution: use an Ultron-style meteor to destroy the earth and therefore all internet devices and humans. Expensive and not very practical. Also everyone would die. Next extreme solution: use a gigantic EMP generator to fry all electronics. Humans *might* survive. That kind of energy use would surely have drastic financial and ecological penalties though, so that's no good either. You want to only disable the Internet. Not all electronics and human life. So you really need to attack the connections.

    If you come up with a good enough draft and enough attention, you could possibly bring down the internet within your lifetime to have it rebuilt. If you come up with more secure protocols or more efficient devices that require new infrastructure, you might get humanity to take down the Internet for you. However, it's more likely that they'll keep the old Internet while building the new one, so this isn't your best bet for getting it taken down.

    The next thing I can think of is the direct solution: physically or technologically attacking attacking every major ISP server farm. This would be a huge operation and you would need a literal army to pull it off. You'd probably also have to take out some space sattelites and heavily guarded government buildings. Again, extremely difficult. It might be harder to kill the internet than the humanity that hosts it.

    Even if you did manage to do that, the Internet would not be "off". It would be crippled, but not dead until you kill every device that has a connection to another device. Even with the big servers gone, routers would still connect to local networks. You could still print docs over wifi, and humanity could definitely share enough information via the crippled internet and old media to rebuild everything you destroyed eventually.

    @chadd17
    1. That Warcraft raid neighbor got me 😂😂
    2. Holy crap that is a comprehensive list of test cases 😂😂😂😂

    @Electrux if the what-if xkcd blog has taught me anything, it's
    #1. There are no stupid questions.
    #2. There is no such thing as overkill.
    #3. Things with mass going very fast is very bad.

    @chadd17 lol ur hilarious 😂😂😂
