    Always happy that Gnu/Linux is on the rise
  • 4
    @legionfrontier
    It's at 3.3% of the overall market share now!
  • 3
    And the remaining 0.1%? BSD and other?
  • 0
    @RiderExMachina is that gnu/Linux or Linux?
  • 0
    @inukinator
    Linux, which includes Google/Linux (chromebooks), and Linux distributions, which some people consider GNU/Linux.
  • 0
    @RiderExMachina what about the other Google/Linux?

    The mobile operating system? Android?
  • 0
    @inukinator
    That is not counted
  • 1
    @RiderExMachina thank you, that was what I needed to know 😊
  • 3
    To everyone confused: this is devRantrons user base. The 0.1% might be unknown systems like UNIX based systems.
  • 1
    @Dacexi but 40.8% of the told systems are UNIX based!
  • 2
    @inukinator Linux is not UNIX. It's UNIX-like
  • 2
    @Dacexi I mean, it is based on Unix, so.. Unix based?
  • 2
    @inukinator yeah true. Also forgot osx is Unix. I was more thinking of bsd and stuff like that.
  • 4
    @inukinator hence the UNIX-like name, reason Torvalds developed from scratch the kernel since the source code was tightly controlled
  • 0
    @legionfrontier whilst unix-like is the more common term, I am too stubborn to say anyone is right! 😅
  • 2
    @inukinator is not just a "common" term, it was obviously pointed out that is not a *clone* Unix source code copy so Torvalds wouldnt got copyrekt by AT&T lawyers, it just works like one, BSD Kernel is a UNIX licensed source code copy thus it *is* a UNIX OS.
    I think the Revolution OS documentary that should be watched for anyone that want to get into the *Nix world https://youtube.com/watch/...

    @runfrodorun >Solaris
    Oh boi... have you guys heard of the Oracle layoff lately?
  • 0
    @inukinator GNU/Linux = Linux
  • 1
    @620hun try say that to Richard Stallman to his face,ever since I met him in person many years ago I never ever wrote just "Linux" alone, I go all the way to properly write "GNU/Linux"
  • 0
    @620hun Linux is a kernel
  • 0
    @runfrodorun GNU/Linux is the FSF's way of saying Linux. Unless someone made a Linux kernel that isn't using GNU software, it's the same thing.

    @legionfrontier I'm jealous. I don't agree with him in many ways, but he's such an interesting figure.

    @runfrodorun this is from Debian: "In a GNU/Linux system, Linux is the kernel component. The rest of the system consists of other programs, many of which were written by or for the GNU Project. Because the Linux kernel alone does not form a working operating system, we prefer to use the term “GNU/Linux” to refer to systems that many people casually refer to as “Linux”."
  • 1
    @620hun Oh you could almost physically palpate the hatred irritating from him at the end of the conference after most people just only kept saying *Linux this* *Linux distro*, thus why I just cant ever write it that way at all, that pitch black hate aura he emitted that time ... I will never forget it
  • 2
    @legionfrontier I completely get where he's coming from. Torvalds gets all the credit while GNU is a huge part of Linux. That being said, everyone calls Linux Linux, because saying "GNU slash Linux" is just a pain, the same way calling any free software "package name slash software name" would be.
  • 0
    @runfrodorun maybe I'm wrong, but Richard Stallman's argument was that Linux was just the missing puzzle from his free OS, so when Torvalds built Linux using GNU packages, Stallman thought of it as a complete product: GNU/Linux. The debate is whether that's legitimate or not. Torvalds calls it Linux, Stallman calls it GNU/Linux.

    It's mostly just an ego fight
  • 0
    @runfrodorun That makes sense
  • 0
    @runfrodorun first: bash is gnu?
    Second: then what's the problem with calling it a Linux Distro if the gnu/Linux part is not considered "right"?
  • 0
    @runfrodorun next thing you tell me, is that gnu c compiler also is gnu 😱
