I have multiple options available, as workplace provides terminal server, or VPN clients for win/mac/debian

@Torbuntu Haven't looked into it, but Wake on WAN should do the trick?

@Torbuntu Good point. You would send an encrypted magic packet and have the Pi decrypt it?

I have a OpenVPN server setup on an unRaid server. All my files are also on there, so no need to leave my desktop powered on.

Nope. But then, a 100kbs connection doesn't really help tbh...

Either via VPN + SSH and X2go
Or double secure SSH (publickey auth + pam 2 factor) + X2go from external
Maybe I should add that I always work "remote". Workstation is a headless VM

For the always on dilemma: The Fritz!Box has the ability to send Wake on Lan packets when needed. You could open a port from the outside (can still be blocked from the client) and the Box will send a WOL if it revives a request on that port and sees the machine as offline. Take a unusual port tho, had the problem of my machine waking up mid-night because of script kiddos scanning the IPv4 net and probing the lower ports
