The mobile web version of GitHub is absolute garbage. It's so shitty I don't even get why they bother. It lacks basic features like issue searching and the interface is so dumbed down everything just feels cheap and I always feel like I'm missing out.
All the devs I've talked to say they always just select "show desktop version." I do that too. It works perfectly. It's so fucking annoying. I wish they would just make a real mobile version, that's not missing features, or just default to the desktop app on mobile - works fine and everyone uses it anyway.44 -
Mobile app dev here 🙋♂️
Guy at work asking me why his phone feels heavier then mine (we have the same phones)
I just told him that his phone gets heavier with every apps he installs.
1 week later he meets me outside the office and tells me he deleted a lot of apps and his phone is actually lighter know.
Sometimes I just want to cry 😂😂😂12 -
A client refused to pay for a hybrid mobile app because he said that he only needed the android version.
After publishing the app he asked if we could submit it on the Apple store because he now wanted the iOS version as well.11 -
Dear websites,
Please stop fucking asking me to install your shitty mobile apps. They do the same thing your site does. I have a browser, and it's a lot better. I don't even visit you every day. But even if I did, and I wanted your crappy app, I'd open the app store and download it by myself. No need to push me.
No need to waste the little screen estate I have with crappy call-to-action sections to download that shit.
Fuck your desire for more information about me. Fuck your narcissistic enjoyment when I have your icon on my fucking home screen.
The truth is, there is a very small number of apps that really need to integrate with a phone to offer better experience.
I feel most of you feel you need to have an app just because everyone else does. And so you could show these little Android and Apple logos on your website or ads. Well, how about you just make sure your site works well on a mobile screen and don't waste your money on a half-baked mobile shit app unless it really offers something worthwhile?
And if you do have a good app and it really does something, ask me just once and fucking respect my choice. Don't just ask me again and again, on every page, with every new session, or I'll just stop visiting.
You're all not that unique, so fuck you!17 -
Turn on WiFi on my smartphone in the morning.
Evening: realize that the WiFi had not connected automatically and I used all my mobile internet.8 -
Dear mobile apps devs,
No one's gonna hate you if you do not provide a multilingual support. Just, please, stop using Google Translate and force the app's language to the phone system's. It's just dumb
Sincerely,
A non native english speaker11 -
When you are on location (football stadium in this case) and you realize that some part of the algorithm isn't working quite right.
We are building a webapp for a little bet-game for our local football team and today was the first live test. I fixed the way the points are calculated in the half-time break.
You can edit code on mobile on gitlab. Doesn't mean you should, but you could. And I did.26 -
My mobile phone provider called me and offered me a new contract containing more data volume.
Customer service: 'Your current contract has only 1.5GB data volume. That's not much. With this you can only send 1 or 2 pictures and that's it.'
Me: 'What kind of pictures do you use / send? 😨'12 -
The new version of the (unofficial) client for Windows 10 mobile is now available! 😁
devRant unofficial (previously devFeed) has been updated to v1.0.0.0 and came out of beta! Over 40 changes since v0.9.10.0 beta.
For those who think that no one uses Windows 10 mobile, the latest version has been downloaded 460+ times! 😉40 -
Samsung.
They basically have Chinese crapware on many phones, disguised as "Smart Manager" or some bs. It's "powered by Clean Master". Clean Master is crapware developed by Cheetah Mobile.12 -
- Take a course called "Mobile Application Development"
- Teacher is new and is thus lost on how things work because there is no formal training for them
- Teacher only knows Objective-C so that's all we're allowed to use
- Nobody owns a Mac and I think one or two people had an iPhone/iPad
- Only 4 public Mac computers are available to the school
- One to two people are on them frequently, limiting our time on them as well
- Not a part of the schools normal imaging and updating system, so we get to do it ourselves, which takes up like a week or two of classes (4 classes)
- This includes installing XCode and getting Apple IDs
- No real instructions are given besides "implement the APIs for Facebook, Twitter, and Google Maps into an app"
- Being an ass, for the final day instead of showing off the app we made I made a PowerPoint of my dislike of Objective-C and various struggles I ran into and how I decided not to make the app at all.
- shrug emoji4 -
"Please make the splash screen longer, 3-5 seconds at least"
So you are the "mobile UX expert"? Do you realize people want to achieve things without wasting time and patience? In 5 seconds I may get distracted with a notification or anything else IRL and I I'll even forget I ever opened your app. Puf, you lost a potentially paying user.
All this just to give some fu***** visibility to some small logos of your sponsors. What about an about page so everybody is happy?4 -
FUCK!!! FUCK IT ALL. FUCK YOU AND YOUR CRAPPY BULLSHT UNDOCUMENTED AND OUTDATED API.
YOUR DATABASE SERVER BACK-END HAS TO BE THE ONE MANAGING THE DISPLAY DATA FOR ITS WEB AND MOBILE CLIENTS. NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND, DAMN IT.
I'M NOT GONNA SIT HERE ALL DAY HARD-CODING ALL YOUR SERVER'S INADEQUACY.
MAKES ME WONDER DO YOU EVER USE DESIGN PATTERNS OR APPLY DESIGN PRINCIPLES? DRY AT LEAST? DON'T FUCKING REPEAT YOURSELF, DAMN IT.
I CAN'T WAIT TO LEAVE THIS PLACE FOR GOOD.6 -
Colleague: Hey want to get access to our repo so we can see each others code, collaborate, discuss design patterns etc?
Me: Yeah sounds like a great idea. Would love to get to know a bit more about how others are building mobile apps in the company.
Colleague: Heres the link to the iOS app: xxxxxxxxxx
*Opens link*
*looks around a bit*
*Opens cocoapods folder*
*Sees 89 dependencies*
Me: .......... actually, you know what, I have major deadlines coming up. I can't look at this right now. Lets talk in the new year.

#¤%@ kid!!! My 5yo son has obviously been playing with his mom's mobile phone. At first, I thought it was a little cute, when I received incoherent texts about Roblox, one of his favourite games.
But then, I suddenly heard from my sister who was really upset and worried. She was wondering if my gf really wants to see her dead, after receiving a facebook pm in English, saying "oh die :-)".
No need for auntie to take it personally though; turned out she was not the only one getting the same message :-O
A little boy is facing a mobile ban for a very long time...11 -
In a mobile project far far away...
Dev: Now we need a ui expert to beautify the app.
Boss: we dont need him its beautiful as it is.
5 mins later....
Boss: here Is a ton of ui changes dear dev. I trust that you have creative insight to make changes that I like :)4 -
i'm seriously over mobile devs not understanding what backend architecture looks like.
the "we don't need a backend, we just need an API." statement drives me up the fucking walls. stop it, you should know better.
sincerely -
your friendly neighborhood web developer.6 -
When you are a mobile developer and your company cant afford more Android devices, so you use your own Android device for testing and then they don't give you wifi access
FUCK :|4 -
So this is a comparison of mobile contract prices in Europe which include 50 GB per month. I think I don‘t want to live in Germany anymore 😓
France: 14,49€
Swiss: 25,46€
...
Germany: 199,95€30 -
Client: We're going to introduce a mobile application.
Me: What will be the features?
Client: It will open up our webpage.
Me:6 -
Client: it's very important that we go live with the app's sign up process.
Me: ...but the mobile apps aren't complete yet.
Client: Yes, but marketing says we need to start getting downloads and sign-ups so we get better ratings than our competitors.
Me: ...but the user won't be able to do anything.
Client: We'll add the rest later when we have users!5 -
At a mobile developer desk:
- 1 PC
- 1 Mac (for iOS Build)
- 2 Android phones and one tablet
- iPhone, iPad
- a lot of cables, too many of them7 -
Travelling by train in Germany shows the 'great' status of the mobile network here.
Even emergency calls aren't possible sometimes...16 -
Ffs Bitbucket, is it really so much to ask for to have a mobile responsive website in 2020 to normally review my pull requests.
Not like we're giving you loads of money for your service already or anything.. 😌6 -
The senior developer who's never had a smartphone in his life gave me a lecture on why my UI improvements to the mobile application were terrible and to revert them. He didn't want to hear squat from me, and was literally saying "You're not gonna win this" while I was trying to argue why these features were necessary.
1 month later, we get a Interaction Design expert to review the app. His recommendations were hardly surprising.
Except, now I have a tighter deadline and will work this weekend. Sigh.4 -
"We don't have time for writing tests"
"Yeah we could write them but only if the client paid us for that"
"You can just test new features manually!"
- Most devs of our mobile team.
Every day they're fighting with bugs and when they're fixed, a couple more pop out of nowhere.
Dear god help me.5 -
WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU APPLE?! THATS A SIXTH OF MY MOBILE DATA! WHERE IS THIS MUCH USAGE COMING FROM?????8

For Fuck's sake never name your variables $a $b or $c. What the fuck I thought that's like the first thing they teach in whichever bush you learnt how to code at!!!!!!9

When your ISP tells you they will transfer your internet connection to your new house in one month and they give you 10GBs on your mobile phone.
And I'm like "Ummm okay, this might be enough for a day or so... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ "4 -
So. My mobile bill is due 24/01/17 and yet it is supposedly "357 days overdue", but a previous one due on 24/11/16 has "295 days left to pay". Some funky handling of the new year going on here....

OK I live in lithuania, small country, my grandparents live in silute, super small city, the internet is shit here, I need to use my mobile data to program, next day I wake up to this graph explaining me how I lost all of my fucking data😤41

FUCK and FUCK I forgot my mobile at apartment and now i am wondering what will I do during breaks at work.8
-
swift might be coming to android
personally I think it would be awesome to have one common language for mobile development that isn't just some hack or patchjob like some other projects are
what do you guys think?31 -
One thing I've noticed about devRant is the ratio of web dev/mobile dev posts to database/architecture/big data dev posts. There's A LOT of you web peeps out there, and not enough data dudes, which I guess justifies my constant demand, salary and lack of competition. Just an observation.9
-
Best thing about being a mobile developer:
Whenever your elders give you shit for being on the phone too much, tell them that you are testing your app and get away with it.1 -
For the love of God. Please stop trying to make me download your shitty mobile app. I don’t have room, and I don’t want it. I just want to read the content that YOU SENT TO ME (looking at you, Quora). Nice way to make sure I unsubscribe and never come back. An unclosable pop up on mobile that just has a button to your mobile app while I have limited data and patience doesn’t do it for me. Fuck whoever came up with THAT brilliant decision.1
-
Oh shit i watched youtube with mobile data and i used 459mb... 31mb left to use it for 12 days... Shit12

Client: I want my site to look exactly like the design.
Me: Of course, but I'm assuming you want it responsive...
Client: yes, I want it to look exactly like the design on all devices.
Me: but that's not how...
Project manager: of course the site will be fully responsive and look exactly the same on all devices.
Me: but...fine.
1 week later...
Project manager: The site looks horrible on mobile!
Me: it matches the design perfectly...3 -
Come across this site http://strml.net and thought it could be a good inspiration for my site. What do you guys think?

Friend: "You are very opinionated about mobile apps aren't you?"
Me: "Yeah, but I have the right opinions"1 -
As someone who works with front end stuff regularly, know what I love about safari? Specifically mobile safari?
Not a god damn fucking thing. If safari was a band, it'd be Nickelback, featuring Kenny G and Michael Bolton.3 -
For fuck sake Facebook! do position:fixed for your goddam toolbar on mobile site because you have that fucking infinite scroll!3

Can't believe this, my boss was pushing me to deploy the new mobile app version and now that its done he is traveling and didn't migrate the data that the app needs to works....2

After moving, I don't have DSL yet so I have to use mobile data to get internet access. Additionally I had to finish a freelancing job. In Germany you have one of the most expensive and least reliable mobile networks in europe.
I had to upload my develpoed software to a remote server
So I suddenly was sent back in time. A single call would have disrupted the download (I can't use internet and phone at the same time, might be a phone issue). While my phone has "high speed" volume left and showed at least HSPA, but I still, the upload rate was prehistoric:9 -
Well done, T-Mobile!
They have an iOS app to handle contract stuff. That app integrates their shop system via an internal browser.
The shop notifies me, that the used browser is not supported by the shop...
Oh and the browser is an embedded safari on iOS 12.5 -
My German bank really needs some better mobile devs. I just tried to do a bank transfer. For some reason, it strips away all letters out of a previously saved IBAN number, and only gives you a keypad for input, so you can't even change it back -.-17
-
Time for some stats gathering! What mobile phone are DevRanters currently using? I've recently switched from iPhone 5 to Nexus 5X and I can surely say I'm not going back 😁60

What's a good reason to be an android lover?
Having 4 apps running on screen at once!
(The 4th is using the quick reply when getting a message)
I still get amazed at how far mobile operating systems have evolved compared to the desktop!17 -
GitHub Beta for mobile,
A brief initial look reveals you can create an manage issues, view pull requests however you can't create them and browse code within a repo.
Oh and hook up to organisations - I'm not in one for this account, so can't browse that section.4 -
So I worked in a company whose WiFi password was 1234567890 and they on the network they had a NAS that was not secured with the passwords to all the clients servers and online accounts on the root.

Sure you know this one:
* Mobile project with realtime notifications
* CEO asks for push implemented with own sockets instead of using firebase or gcm
* Spends loads of time of money and time
* Asks to dev why It costs so much
* Blames the dev for socket implementatiom2 -
Did this happen because i spilled beer on my phone last night ?
PS : Don't ask me why I use a Windows Mobile.
I just like the interfere very much.8 -
In my view, there is exactly 1, very specific occasion, when hybrid / app wrappers / webviews etc. are the right approach for a mobile app.
1. Never8 -
Learning mobile development so far has been 5% writing code and 95% screaming at .XML documents. It's been 8 hours of work and all I have to show for it is a few buttons and a really shitty UI6
-
Absolutely detest some devs push their advertisement as fucking VIDEO in mobile webpage. There goes my monthly data quota for that silly ads. Fucking unethical.5

How does GDPR affect you as a freelancer in mobile/web development?
I'm asking because I eventually plan on freelancing but I have no clue how to deal with these stuff.9 -
First few times being made to make mobile responsive emails (from scratch, not generators) was an utter psychedelic mess I never wish to have the pleasure of returning too.
I since have had the pleasure of refusing this, as being able to maintain this chaotic mess created which has to be able to work across the major email clients is just a living nightmare.
There’s hell, then there’s a whole other level.1 -
Agreed to work on a mobile app project on Android. No contract signed, just was given what the client wanted from this sub-contractor.
No specific details given, had to figure out a lot of the minute details of how they wanted the application to behave. We would deliver a working part of the product before getting a % of the pay. We charged $30 /hr on a mobile app, low as heck.
It was me and another developer, neither of us had any contact with the clients to ask questions, all questions had to go through the sub-contractor. Many arguments and months later we find that what they're asking for only a phone manufacturer can do. Sub-contractor blames us for not doing our "research" when she/he was the only one able to contact the client to get requirements.
Sub-contractor wanted us to refund money. We declined but offered solutions.
Sub-contractor goes to client and manages to get approval of what we were able to do. Finally a light in this dark tunnel spanning 7 months.
On the day of releasing to the client the finished app, we get notification from Google that the app won't be published due to a recent policy change that came into effect in January. WTF.
Go back to sub-contractor, tell the bad news. Once again he/she says it's our fault for not doing the "research". Yeah as if we knew what Google is going to change. Asks for paid money back. We refuse.
We lastly suggested that we remove what Google wants removed on the app and release it that way.
We had billed 300 hours cumulative divided among 3 people (including the sub-contractor who didn't appear to do anything), and just 2 months of development. It's been 7 months and we were only paid for 240 hours, the rest was unpaid, and the sub-contractor still wants to make us give it back. /rant13 -
Desktop, Pushing updates - Ok let me check my site on mobile now.
On mobile ( after half hour, on devRant ) .."Damn I have to check the site"1 -
That moment when your mobile internet is so slow and you decide to ssh into your server and use elinks to browse the web and everybody around you is like "he's hacking" and I'm like IM JUST TRYING TO READ FUCKING NEWS BECAUSE GUESS WHO DOESNT PAY SO MUCH FUCKING MONEY FOR 1GB PER MONTH WHERE 500MB ARE USED AFTER VISITING ONE FUCKING SITE BECAUSE THERE ARE SO MANY DAMN ADS ON IT. I JUST WANT TO READ NEWS OR LEARN SOME C++++++++++ BUT INTERNET IS TOO SLOW TO OPEN FUCKING DDG.
Browsing the web in terminal is super nice btw. Really recommend that8 -
Phones are getting bigger screens but also heavier. Why can't they just make a mobile phone that fits nicely on one hand and doesn't weigh like 1/4th of a kilo (phone+casing+screen protector).31

Dear Mobile Designers,
There is a difference between mobile first and mobile preferred. Stop being lazy and take advantage of desktop real estate. My monitor is not a big ass tablet.
Thank you,
Desktop End User1 -
Don't you hate it when your testers file an issue under the mobile app project for bugs in the web app, because they happen to be using the web app on their mobile phone browsers and suddenly its the mobile app dev's fault?3

Reporter: We are now here reporting live from the native mobile app wilderness. As you can see in our captured footage, a developer is going rampage over some mobile UI components.
Native iOS: grrrr... I hate radio buttons!!!..grrr...dropdown lists, too! keep them away from me! I'm allergic to android and web controls, d*mn it! what kind of designer are you!?!
Reporter: That's it for today's devRant episode. Back to you, Steve.1 -
When there’s a glaring user-facing issue in your company’s app that can cause the user to spend mobile data after specifically choosing a setting that’s supposed to prevent that.
And your boss says your fix is “out of scope for the current sprint.” And the product team agrees with him.
I ALREADY DID THE WORK AND HAD IT VERIFIED BY QA.
Sometimes I Hate agile. Then again, I don’t think we’re doing it quite right anyway.2 -

I want to share this story and need your advise.
When I was teaching exisiting team members about git and new iOS development ecosystem. I was changing the whole ios development practices and processes that time. One of my teammates wasn’t listening, when implementing the new ios development practices and standards, he actually screwed all of the projects.
He’s been with us for 2 years and he even don’t know how to use git. He forcefully push his changes without pulling our changes first. I was so angry that I reported him to my manager to address this matter. And then my manager told me, he is aware of my teammate’s incapabilities. He said he was planning to terminate him, and he is been thinking about it for 3 months.
When the judgement day came, we were in the meeting room. My manager told us the bad news that one of us will be terminated. During the meeting he said, “I am sorry, {my teammate’s name}. You will be out of the team due to {reason of termination}. {my name} reported to me that you dont meet the deadline, you are always late with 2 weekly sprint to your tickets”. As my manager keeps talking, my teammate look at me with his eyes so angry together with his girlfriend (her girlfriend is part of mobile team, but she is focused on UI/UX).
After my manager stops talking, her girlfriend started crying and said I was the one who should be terminated. Her reason was that I keep on giving difficult tasks to his boyfriend, that’s why he is always late to report. In my defense, those tasks are not difficult, most of his tasks is just changing the color of labels, changing layouts. If you are an iOS developer you know how easy it is to change font colors, changing the layouts using storyboards. Her girlfriend keeps on rambling that I should be the one needs to be terminated.
After few days, he left the team and surprisingly his girlfriend stayed and we never talk to each other except anything about work.
I am really pissed guys. Now my teammates think I am the bad guy asking my manager to terminate anyone in the team if I feel to. I feel very very not good in my work now. I can’t function what I used to. The termination of my teammate was already planned why am I should take the blame?17 -
Telstra and Vodafone Australia have released unlimited data plans for mobile.
With a base of40GB for $69/month and 40GB for $60/ month respectively.
When you go over the limit, it then throttles you to 1.5Mbps max.
It's a start, better than charging you heaps for going over, but they still have a way to go...6 -

Ok dev's, im proposing a small movement for windows 10 mobile, if you have used windows 10 mobile personally, you will know it is actually a fantastic operating system that is super snappy and easy to develop for (No i'm not a microsoft fan boy, far from actually).
The only downfall of the OS is the app support, so im proposing devs come together and create quality apps and games for win 10 mobile.
Hopefully this can sort of persuade others into a revolution of sorts (And hopefully change microsofts mind of abandoning it), I personally will support windows 10 mobile for every game I create, within reason.18 -
I'm a web dev who decided to take a shot at mobile development (My first mobile app mind you). I'm writing a mobile app and one of it's features is communicating to my server via websockets.
So I write the code, click to send the data and my server doesn't receive it. Fuck. I check why. I log everything. Nothing.
I spend several of hours and I'm exhausted by this point so i call one of our mobile developers to help me. Turns out my emulator didn't have a WiFi module. FUCK.
Alright so I compile it to an apk and install it on my phone. I popped open a terminal and started my local node server.
I click on the mobile app...
NOTHING LOGS. FUUUUUUCK.
And this is the best part.
Apparently I deleted the console.dir call from my server that executed when it received some data from an emitter.
I only thought of this last night at 2am so I got up and checked. Yep. Kill me.1 -
Why would a university not offer a single course on mobile development in 2017?
Luckily, Stanford's iOS course on iTunes U seems to be pretty legit.4 -
I reset my mobile (Wileyfox Pro Windows 10) today and I had to open my old Lumia 535 to get a code for an app. The moment I turned it on the sensation of meeting a friend from old came back to me. I didn't realise I would be missing my old device.
It's kind of sad that Microsoft decided to pull the plug once again on their mobile platform. I liked the minimalism they brought to the interface and the integration they were trying to add between different devices.
All is gone now and I am left to wonder with the possibilities that would have brought.2 -
So I log into a great new site with my development machine. 64G of RAM, and 2 hex core CPU's; GTX 1070 video, SSD, etc. 4K display screen. (Motherboard is 5 years old, not trying to brag, just give context). I regularly put 8 pages of text on the screen side by side. Split ergonomic keyboard.
It wants me to load a mobile app for "full access".
Yea, why look at the world with wide open eyes when you can view everything through a cardboard toilet paper tube and type with your thumbs???

Mobile phones are from hell >:[ Well, at least my gf's Samsung is from hell. It makes noise for anything. If someone calls, play a stupid melody. If there is a text, play a stupid melody. If its battery needs to be charged, play a stupid melody. If its battery is fully charged, play a stupid melody. Even if it's in the middle of the night and people just maybe would like to get a few minutes of sleep! What's next? Play a stupid melody when the stupid Samsung Android piece of junk wants its diaper changed? Or when it's bored? Or just needs attention? Or when it realises that the word "smart" in smart phones actually means stupid? SHUT UP!!! We don't need a tamagotchi, we already have two kids and two cats to fullfill our tamagotchying needs! Technology is supposed to make life easier, not worse FFS! No wonder so many people get stressed out these days! And you, pathetic people at Samsung, or whoever that come up with these "smart" features that deprave decent people of their sleep, now it's your turn to be woken up! WAKE UP IDIOTS! Get outside your small mobile-bound shitholes of confined fart-filled bubbles! Learn about REAL LIFE, get yourselves nagging gfs, screaming kids and a PUNCH IN YOUR FACES! Maybe that will teach you to manufacture phones that SHUT THE FUCK UP during sleeping hours!31

Cross platform mobile with Xamarin, an internship asked me to learn Xamarin for them, I found that the docs Xamarin had were surprisingly helpful compared to other places
After continuing to pursue mobile with Xamarin I now feel I know multiple native apis very well (iOS and Android) and have found my favorite language (C#) so I've also learned a ton about how code and compilers work and all sorts of other things
Xamarin has been an incredible learning tool9 -

To my client who wants a two-column formatted email built with tables in Constant Contact to appear in the same two-column format on mobile devices: You're lying when you say your previous developer achieved a legible, mobile, tiny screen email this way. I know because I can see the previous email formatting. In fact, I cloned that exact email and merely swapped out the content. You really do not understand what you're asking for.4
-
I've seen several rants on here about poor documentation on great libraries. Well I just spent 9 hours in a car today and I realized that even the ones that have great documentation absolutely SUCK at being mobile friendly. I'm no web developer but how freaking hard is it to optimize your stupid website for small screens??? There are a million frameworks out there you can choose from PLUS it's almost entirely text so it can't be that hard!! I have to zoom in about 300% to be able to read it, then I have to scroll back and forth because it no longer fits on the screen.

I know its been quite a while since ive posted last but it is safe to say that i am back! And boy do i have some stuff to bitch about.
This semester, Im taking mobile app development as a class. I chose to take this class over the introductory c# class, so that i wouldn't need to work with Windows or really do anything else to touch Windows. Well the joke is on me. Here i was thinking that we would be using a bit of Java from time to time while only really learning best practices and concepts.
Never did i think that this class's curriculum would be entirely based off of Xamarin.
Seeing as I need either this class or the two c# classes to graduate, I had to bite the bullet and just accept that my semester would be full of irritation during this class.
Its been about seven weeks in, and i have turned in 8 assignments.
All 8 of those assignments have been Windows Form Applications doing simple shit like dividing two numbers.
We have not made anything for multiple devices. We have not made anything for even one mobile device. We have not even discussed how to do this in the class.
This wouldnt bother me so much since these are typically easy programs that take about 30 minutes to make and test and submit for grading. It does insanely bother me, however, that it takes Windows so FUCKING LONG to boot, or when it freezes every 2 minutes because i clicked into another program, or it just HANGS ON THE UPDATING SCREEN AT 36% FOR THREE DAYS, or when it took 4 different reinstallations of Visual Studio 2017 before i could actually open without an error code.
College, Ive learned, tests my patience way more than it has ever tested my knowledge.2 -

Mobile developers of the world. Hear my words. Two things: 1. Why is every mobile site nowadays specifically geared to being as nonfriendly to mobile devices as possible? You should probably remember that mobile devices are resource constrained much like early 00s PCs. Maybe we don't need the full HD 3 megapixel version of the image. And we definitely don't need those full screen scroll ad things. In fact, I am 100% less likely to purchase their product if you include these. Which sucks because Hidden Valley salad dressing is pretty good, but now I have to settle for Wishbone.
2. Maybe you don't need to gamify everything. (Looking at you Waze). Or maybe don't give points to everyone who has ever posted about that red light cam outside of my work. It has been there for thirty years. I don't need to be reminded 80 times because someone wants imaginary GPS points. Yes I realize the irony of posting about gamification on a gamified site. I am fine with this.2 -

As far as mobile games go I am never to interested in or really bother much with some of them. But Honkai Impact 3rd really makes me go woaaah every time I play it. I do not have a good eye for graphics at all and I am not much of a pc or console gamer. So take that with a grain of salt.4

Been a mobile developer since April, liking the experience and the amount of projects that I've been a part of.
And one of the things that I've learned about this is that sometimes the client doesn't even know what he really wants. I mean for fucksakes, we implement everything, and new functionalities and there's always something that works on every other app (and is basically a standard) and he thinks is not suppose to be like that...
And another thing. Fuck Apple Store. At the company we've developed an app that practically shows information that only users should see (in our logic is sensitive information from our clients) and they DECLINED 4 FUCKING TIMES THE APP. Reason? Since the app's purpose "isn't correlated" with the basical information we show, the user can navigate through the app without going through login.
We basically added an "explore option" that shows basically nothing and they've accepted. FUCK APPLE FOR WAISTING OUR TIME AND THE CLIENTS TIME1 -

In my country there is a huge economy deflation.
Like 1 year ago 1USD used to be 1500 pounds.
Nowadays 1USD is more like 7800 pounds.
Wait a second let me explain more into details the whole flow.
There are 3 to 4 prices we are being dealing with:
* Official Bank price that refuse to change the base price: 1500 pounds
* Bank ATM machines that exchange your dollars on a 3900 pounds per usd
* Black market: 7800 pounds managed by random mobile apps that spread rumors
* Foreigners currency: the only way to grab your reach dollars.
Long story short:
Whenever you want to win extra cash, you ask any of your relatives to lend you money from any bank in the world ( foreigners currency), try to ask in black market who is willing to exchange, you meet, you check on any mobile app what's the current price and you do the exchange.
So in order buy USD dollars on a low price, devs build 2 mobile apps one that send a POST request to change the amount in DB and a second one fo retrieve this value.
So whenever he want to buy dollars he change the value to the lowest. And whenever you want to sell the dev raise the amount slowly. So far the government has no regulations over developers why? Because the one behind the forensic are at least 60 to 70 years old more like their informations are dead.
So we struggle.13 -

Html5 "Native" Applications are not needed. Let's cover mobile first of all, the misconception that apps are written in either javascript or Native android/ Native ios environment. Or even some third party paid tools like xamarin is quite strange to me. OpenGL ES is on both IOS and Android there is no difference. It's quite easy to write once run everywhere but with native performance and not having to jump through js when it's not needed. Personally I never want to see html or css if I'm working on a mobile app or desktop. Which brings me to desktop, I can't begin to describe how unthought out an electron app is. Memory usage, storage space for embedding chromium, web views gained at the expense of literally everything else, cross platform desktop development has been around for decades, openGL is everywhere enough said. Finally what about targeting browser if your writing a native app for mobile and desktop let's say in c++ and it's not in javascript how can it turn back into javascript, well luckily c++ has emscripten which does that simply put, or you could be using a cross complier language like haxe which is what I use. It benefits with type safety, while exporting both c++ and javascript code. Conclusion in reality I see the appeal to the js ecosystem it's large filled with big companies trying to make js cross development stronger every day. However development in my mind should be a series of choices, choices that are invisible don't help anyone, regardless of the popularity of the choice, or the skill required.8 -

If I'm on github on a phone it means I clicked a fucking link so I want to see how many stars the repo has or star it myself for later.
Without the star rating I might as well search a forum for libraries because the main reason I use github is so that I can see how many people are using the code so I know it's going to be maintained in the future.

I’m a mobile developer, iOS is my main platform. When I work for local clients, from Serbia and region, in most cases I get design by Android standards, Android native features etc, and they usually don’t have understanding for changing to iOS native features and that is just ugly, less quality UX and frustrating. In my region Android is main platform. Does anyone have this kind of problems? Is this happening at your place? Please share your experience, it will help me a lot with mine fights with windmills!5

Hello everbody!
For college I'm doing a small research project. The goal of my research is give advice to web developers on using JavaScript frameworks to create mobile applications and help them decide which framework to use by comparing 3 popular frameworks. I decided to compare React Native, Ionic and NativeScript. I myself have only used React Native to build a mobile application. I would like to get some opinions from other developers on this matter. I want to compare the frameworks based on the following categories: developing time, performance, debugging an learning curve. Are there developers here who would be willing to write their experience with these frameworks? Or maybe some of you know a forum or other place where I can ask for some help:)3 -

Tried to create a default Navigation Drawer activity on Android Studio, result:
- Compilation erros out of nowhere

I was watching some mobile coding stuff and I've discovered Flutter.
I've seen a lot of people hyped for this framework, so I've downloaded a couple apps made with it.
Amazing UI and animations, but everything feels laggy.

First rant!!
I've got into an impasse.
I'm working as a mobile developer for one of the well known multinational corporations. I am working here for 1.5 years, it's my first job and I'm already a team leader. It doesn't mean that this is my programming experience. The problem is that I'm feeling that this job stops me from growing on personal plan. I have no more time to work on my personal projects, i have no real portfolio, projects made for the company cannot be included in my portfolio and so on. And also the payment isn't real good so i can't quit and allocate my full time to my own projects. And without a good portfolio i can't get my own customers.
What do you guys would do in my situation.3 -

During my small tenure as the lead mobile developer for a logistics company I had to manage my stacks between native Android applications in Java and native apps in IOS.
Back then, swift was barely coming into version 3 and as such the transition was not trustworthy enough for me to discard Obj C. So I went with Obj C and kept my knowledge of Swift in the back. It was not difficult since I had always liked Obj C for some reason. The language was what made me click with pointers and understand them well enough to feel more comfortable with C as it was a strict superset from said language. It was enjoyable really and making apps for IOS made me appreciate the ecosystem that much better and realize the level of dedication that the engineering team at Apple used for their compilation protocols. It was my first exposure to ARC(Automatic Reference Counting) as a "form" of garbage collection per se. The tooling in particular was nice, normally with xcode you have a 50/50 chance of it being great or shit. For me it was a mixture of both really, but the number of crashes or unexpected behavior was FAR lesser than what I had in Android back when we still used eclipse and even when we started to use Android Studio.
Developing IOS apps was also what made me see why IOS apps have that distinctive shine and why their phones required less memory(RAM). It was a pleasant experience.
The whole ordeal also left me with a bad taste for Android development. Don't get me wrong, I love my Android phones. But I firmly believe that unless you pay top dollar for an android manufacturer such as Samsung, motorla or lg then you will have lag galore. And man.....everyone that would try to prove me wrong always had to make excuses later on(no, your $200_$300 dllr android device just didn't cut it my dude)
It really sucks sometimes for Android development. I want to know what Google got so wrong that they made the decisions they made in order to make people design other tools such as React Native, Cordova, Ionic, phonegapp, titanium, xamarin(which is shit imo) codename one and many others. With IOS i never considered going for something different than Native since the API just seemed so well designed and far superior to me from an architectural point of view.
Fast forward to 2018(almost 2019) adn Google had talks about flutter for a while and how they make it seem that they are fixing how they want people to design apps.
You see. I firmly believe that tech stacks work in 2 ways:
1 people love a stack so much they start to develop cool ADDITIONS to it(see the awesomeios repo) to expand on the standard libraries
2 people start to FIX a stack because the implementation is broken, lacking in functionality, hard to use by itself: see okhttp, legit all the Square libs, butterknife etc etc etc and etc
From this I can conclude 2 things: people love developing for IOS because the ecosystem is nice and dev friendly, and people like to develop for Android in spite of how Google manages their API. Seriously Android is a great OS and having apps that work awesomely in spite of how hard it is to create applications for said platform just shows a level of love and dedication that is unmatched.
This is why I find it hard, and even mean to call out on one product over the other. Despite the morals behind the 2 leading companies inferred from my post, the develpers are what makes the situation better or worse.
So just fuck it and develop and use for what you want.
Honorific mention to PHP and the php developer community which is a mixture of fixing and adding in spite of the ammount of hatred that such coolness gets from a lot of peeps :P
Oh and I got a couple of mobile contracts in the way, this is why I made this post.

mobile browsers not refreshing stylesheets.
this is the worst thing that mankind ever did. I mean, when you are trying to design a website and the changes you make to the css are not loaded by the browser, you have no clue wtf is going on. There is no way to make the browser refresh the stylesheet. Reloading, entering the url manually, reopening the tab, restarting the browser, nothing works. The only fix is to manually clear the app's cache in android settings.
The strange thing here is that at first the stylesheet gets refreshed like it should, but after some time the cache seems to be capped and it wont load sh*t...
This is soooo frustrating :(((3 -

So I've just finished my prerequisite computer science classes (up to advanced Java OOP) and I have 7 months off until I can transfer to university. What should I do to maintain & get ahead with my engineering skills? I've started a class on git online already, but what else? Build on my Java skills with spring and rest APIs, or a different stack. I am really interested in mobile development and have made simple android apps before.

Experience with Plasma Mobile, part 2.
I was able to clone the official master repository and commit my hacks to it, but when I sent the pull request, the current active maintainer said that the master branch was actually severely out of date and to try the "halium-flash" branch.
So I did. I checked out the "halium-flash" branch and attempted to install Plasma Mobile. The bash file used to flash the phone still needed to be hacked around, though my previous commit was made irrelevant by the change. However, I did get it working on my phone.
So, here are my thoughts: It's most definitely not ready. The lock screen looks pretty and is well put together, and the "desktop" and icons for applications look very nice.
However, my phone does not have a physical "home" button, and Plasma Mobile to date does not have a digital "home" button. So, in order to close an application I have to literally reboot my phone.
As of yet there seems to not be any tactile feedback or visual feedback, which is odd when typing in the passcode to log into Plasma Mobile or trying to open an application.
Firefox crashes if you try to open it, and currently there are two choices of wallpaper. I haven't tried calling someone, but I'm fairly certain that Plasma Mobile does not support telephony on my phone type.
So, my verdict is still the same: I have great hopes for the Plasma Mobile project, but unless you are a developer who is interested in making it a better product, I would stay away for now.6 -
Hi there..
I have a strange question (at least in my opinion). I learned Flutter for over 1 year (as of now). I don't consider myself advanced on it, but I'm very capable when it comes to create complex UIs, work with APIs and DBs, etc. However, it came to my mind to visit frontend development. I started with Angular, and I LOVED IT.
I'm wondering, is it possible to master both crafts (i.e., mobile and web development) at the same time 🤔.. I'm really into programming and any CS-related content in general, but I wonder if there's an answer to my question :).8 -
If you've already upvoted on the first 3 rants of the refreshed algo page, then you should better go check mobile data usage 😂

Do you feel that mobile development destroys your phone battery? At least when developing React-Native, I use a cable most of the time and thus, the phone gets charged.
After some time it feels like the battery is draining faster. I experienced this with the second phone already.
Makes most sense if you have a separate dev phone, I guess...6 -
I do mobile. I've dealt with Android XML, windows XAML, iOS auto-layout.
Flutter is some new hot shit in mobile.
But for fucks sake, I bet they couldn't make more ugly UI creation way. I'm trying for a month already to go there and touch it with a stick at least.1 -
Has anyone here ever developed in Flutter/Dart for mobile development? I'm researching it for use in freelance developing mobile applications and it's looking pretty intuitive so far.
Pros/Cons vs. other mobile development languages/frameworks?
Opinions/thoughts on developing in Flutter/Dart?4 -
What did you pay for the mobile Internet connection in you country?
I pay in Germany for 500MB/ 7.99€36 -
Does anybody teach mobile development live? For example as code is being written they are providing audible commentary that is also captioned that is also downloadable after session is closed. A cool feature would be to have a q and a live and it picks up the commentary and/or question from the audience too, I think I just thought of another sound mobile app idea!5

Any thoughts on Flutter ? I'm considering using it, but from what I've seen its use case is for performance, compared to other more mature frameworks like phonegap.
Flutter looks way easier to use though.
Anyone have experience with these ? -
I love devRant, but one thing that I don't like is that all improvements are only coming to the mobile apps, and you can only become devRant++ using a mobile app. This is kinda discriminating against all of us who for various reasons cannot or will not use mobile apps. I am a dev; I use computers with big displays , (preferrably fullsize) keyboard and mouse. I do own a smartphone (a *real* one, with buttons, not a despicable touchscreen), but I use it for SMS/MMS and phone calls only. Mobile apps are just useless to me. The screen is too small and the numeric keypad doesn't lend itself for typing anything but brief texts. A bigger mobile phone wouldn't be a mobile phone. If it doesn't fit into the pocket and cannot be comfortably held against the ear, I might just as well carry around a laptop and then we're back where this rant started. I am a dev and love computers. Sure, I can develop for mobile phones too if needed, I'm just not the end-user.18

Where to begin for writing à mobile payment API for m'y country (and countryside) ?
M'y wish IS to build a mobile payment API that would help everyone to pay online no matter what carrier the user 's subscribed to.9 -
Struggling to write my Engineering Thesis code. Not because I'm afraid of tech, but because I have no idea what it should do.
I'm testing mobile apps performance, but getting the right idea is pain in the ass. :(
Never been too creative, but always have been over ambitious and lazy.
So the deadline is coming slowly, I have specified my 'tests' (authorization, API connection, heavy calculations, graphics, database handling) and still don't know what my app should do.
And ideas or suggestions what else is to test? -
Guys, I would like to learn how to make web design for mobile. But I don't know where to begin, can you help please?13

What is happening?!! Github actually added search and tag filter to issues on mobile...
Better late than never I guess -
yesterday i worked a bit on my sites, checked again today to find them slow af. checked for flaws and recursions, did not find any. google page speed insights were totally fine. then i tried with my mobile connection and it was really fast. wtf vodafone?!
(speedcheck for dsl was fine)4 -
I hate Lucky Patcher. Also Game Guardians. People are using these programs to hack my mobile game, turn off ads and get all inapp purchases for free :(11

Hey all,
I’m starting as a full stack dev and trying out a bunch of stacks (node, flask, java...) not sure how to really go on a path that can make me a good full stack developer for mobile apps.
I would appreciate if you could suggest me any learning resource or any tool to get started with mastering full stack!! :)3 -
What's the best mobile development framework coming from Angular perspective? Ionic? Should I also study React and React Native? 🧐
How about flutter? How about in terms of job demands? I'm a PHP and JS guy4 -
How do the FOSS mobile OSes fare? Are they viable in terms of communication (ports/comparability) with common use apps?1

I never agreed with form-over-function but at least I could understand it. I will never understand the mobile industry's near-unilateral shift towards gimmicks-over-both-form-and-function though. I will go back to Windows Mobile before I ever buy another phone with a curved touchscreen or any phone with a fucking horrible "notch".2

So I do some custom integrations for a local bank. A customer is referred to me by the Bank, we failed to o agree on the price by about 100usd. The customer the goes to some old timer who doesn't even know the difference between php and asp. Then new 'dev' can't figure out how to do the integration and then turns to me to do the work for him for 1/3 of what I had charged the client. Don't know if I should tell him to go to hell or call the customer and ask him to get a hire someone who can differentiate between his nose and ass hole.1

Not a rant but just curious to see what mobile OS do all you devs on devRant use?
I recently moved from Android to iOS. Doing so has made me realise how much I loved using Android but due to its inherent stuttery lag, inferior standby time and memory management, I will be staying with iOS for now.
What are your reasons on using the mobile OS that you are using now?7 -
You know there's something seriously wrong with a "framework" when it takes 20 minutes to figure out how to SHIFT A BUTTON INSIDE A HEADER.
Fuck you jQuery Mobile. I wish you had never been born.

I plan to change my working machine and decided to go with mbp but I confused which one to choose, whether 13" or 15". Which one the most suitable for dveloping mobile apps?4
-
This is a legit rant.
What would you ask in a written/online test if you are hiring a mobile app developer, specifically android?
I'll tell you guys what I was asked after I get 10 comments sharing the community's views, so that I don't make a fool of myself.5 -
Ok, i will give a try to crossplateform mobile dev.
So what's ur advice fellow programers ? Xamarin or ReactNative ?
1 choice, 1 argument (main one)11 -
!rant but it's a history
Last months I've been working on an investigation for an assignment on my uni. I required to collect specific data, so I coded an app to aid me on that. Time goes by and one day my mobile development teacher calls me (I used the app for my investigation and as final project on another subject) and tells me if I want to go into a contest with my app, "Why not?" I thought.
I asked some friends to join me because the contest required a team of 3 members minimum. In two days I had to justify the development of my app, how I would make money with it and other stuff.
I swear, this app was just a by-product, and I know you're hoping to hear a win story... We got second place, but hell it feels good to think that some sleepless nights coding along could give back so much.
Moral of the story: Never give up any chance.2 -
Has anyone used the new Visual Studio with Xamarin studio built in to build mobile apps? I was doing some research for my senior (we are thinking of going mobile), and wanted to see what the community thought of it. What do you guys think?1

Anybody used nativescript for mobile app development? Is it worth looking into or are there better alternatives for that?1

so i got this client i'm developing a mobile app for. i don't have a contract with him and i'm afraid he doesn't pay after the app goes live. any recommendations how to make the app obsolete if he doesn't pay.2

Guys, what's the most popular cross-platform mobile app framework out there?
We recently ported our apps from Flash to Xamarin.Form..3 -
Read an article about "Who is gonna grab the position of Google ". Nice jnsight about how a giant like Google can lose control of Android , due to proliferation of cross platform apllications . Instilled fear in my mind due to my lack of mobile developement knowledge . Interesting perspective on how cross platform developement can trigger downfall of Android..2

Developing for mobile feels like crap to a web dev (ME). I spend days configuring testing and CD and when the builds and 563 tests finally pass, and I try and download the APK thinking it'll work PSYCHE the app can't open.
-
Recently asked myself questions:
Which is the most unpleasant when you developing a mobile application (for me its when design(UI/UX) changes after feature was developed.
which is the most complicated stage in developing a mobile application for you
Place plus(like) if you are mobile dev
P.S. Unicorns are real🦄🦄🦄1 -
!rant && !question
If anyone has some info on this behaviour :P
I've got this website and it loads fine and stuff, but for some reason when I pop chrome into mobile mode on my desktop (you know the mobile emulator thingymabob) and reload the page the server returns a 500 error, like how does that even work?
(works on an actual phone btw, safari, edge, IE, Firefox, ....)
FYI I use lighttpd as a webserver4 -
For all the gamers here, whether hardcore or casual, what do you think of the mobile gaming market? Why is it so successful despite apparent rejection from a lot of gamers? Is it fine the way it is, or can it be improved (and how)?9

Has anyone here tried Sailfish OS? I'm actually pretty impressed by it. It feels like a true mobile version of Linux without all the privacy issues of Android (Google) and the freedom you don't get with iOS. I think it looks pretty great too.
If you have tried it, what do you think?3 -
So here is a mini rant from an amateur/hobbyist developer (me).
Over the past week, I've taken on a project that is much larger than any other projects i've attempted to handle (steam trading bot). This meant that there would be logic flaws, weird bugs due to unexpected behavior from shitty web apis (and their poor documentation hmmmm).
Anyhow, fast forward a few days and the code is complete. It's mostly functional, apart from a few glitches and unexpected behavior here and there...or so i thought. Apparently if someone trades and item to me that isnt in my pricegrid, the bot freaks out and kills itself, relaunches, and repeats this cycle (pm2). And i only found out about this on my way to school
So in desperation to fix such a critical flaw in my code (if my bot breaks a lot and doesnt accept trades, i can get banned from backpack.tf), i bust out my only device which is my phone, and start editing away (JuiceSSH and turbo client is godsend ty). 30 minutes later, after toiling through code with no indentation or syntax highlights (mobile pls), ive fixed it. So i push to live and alls well.
Then I arrive at school, pull out my laptop and decided to check up on my code to see if anything needs fixing.
Oh look in one line i used '||' instead of '&&'.
ok lets fix it.
ok lets push to live again.
I launched WinSCP to move the files onto the server, and just as the loading bar finishes and the file is overwritten, i realized; FUCK the code i had on my laptop wasnt the latest version i just worked on on my phone.
So that's that. 30 minutes of typing code without indentation and syntax highlighting on a 5 inch screen and it's all gone.
TLDR:
Version control is a must. -
Have the developpers from Microsoft who made the new version of Outlook.com even tested their product on smartphones ? I can't delete my mails from the mobile version and everything take years to make -_-"3

Why hasn't anyone made a mobile SASS app yet? Sometimes you need to code on the go, and you just can't drag around a laptop.
Or is there an app and I just can't find it?6 -
To the UI/UXs... Which of these approaches is more Mobile User Friendly?
- A single screen with all 12 form fields visible to the user, where only four of these fields are optional and inputs are validated on submission.
----- OR -----
- A single screen with fields split into 12 sub screens, a form progress bar at the top, a next and previous button with "skip" button for optional fields, with inputs validated progressively.
You can imagine the contents of the form like the ones on surveys. I have already implemented the second option but in doubts of its friendliness, I also had previously implemented something similar to the first but with criticism from colleges stating it's too much fields in one screen.
I would love to see from your view and learn from your experience... What do you think?10 -
Just noticed my profile said I was primarily a mobile device. People, rest assured, I am no robot! *beep boop*

Something interesting i learned today about the html5 video tag is that even if preload is set it's up to the player the render engine is using to fetch the index of the file first as with mp4 this is usually at the end of the file.
This means that for Blink and Gecko most likely fetch this first themselves. But for webkit it opens in quicktime on mobile devices which you cannot pass parameters to and flat out waits for the entire stream to start playing.1 -

The mobile availability here starts to really annoy me. At least once a day it’s just gone for 10min.

I am a technical writer. I have good knowledge of Node and Angularjs so my all blogs are related to these technologies. But now, I want to write something related to online food delivery services. This business is in demand at this time and mobile application is the reason. Any advice or suggestions related to online food delivery mobile app development would be great for me.
Currently, I am collecting some information through this resource https://iglobsyn.com/on-demand-food... -

Is anyone else having issues with accurately viewing screen sizes in chrome? I feel like mobile view in dev tools has been really letting me down lately, as some things don’t appear as they do natively. I’ve had to resort to just loading iphone/android sims and view localhosts in their respected browsers but that’s really a pain in the ass compared to just opening up dev tools.

Creating a mobile application. Only a simple calendar with some features. Should I use native code or use hybrid?

Help me make the decision for taking mobile app development services
I need some serious help in making the right decision for taking the mobile app development services. I have all the plans ready to get the mobile app developed for both the android and iPhone users, but I am not sure whether I should I hire a mobile app development company (https://mobiledevelopmentcompany.app/...)or should I hire a freelance mobile app developer to get the services. I want the application to be in good quality and should be developed in minimum time. What do you suggest I should do? Kindly share your views in the comments section. I will be waiting for your opinions.2 -
What is the best idea you have seen so far as a mobile application?
Come put as well as steal some ideas for yourself 😂1
