Finally decided to get myself some remote server on DO, faffing around and setting things up, and suddenly I decide to look at my access logs, someone was trying to figure out how to connect to mysql, phpMyAdmin and what's not... Too bad for him I won't have any of those installed until I know how to properly secure all this :)

Heh... Welcome to the real world I guess?

    As for server security, look at OSSEC, csf and/or fail2ban :)

    I'll give those a look :)

    need to get HTTPS first, which does not go as planned...

    Be alert! There are a lot of Chinese hackers at the door of ur do server mostly brute forcing phpmyadmin.

    But well, I will never install that on a remote server unless I am a pro at security

    I'm already freaking out when I see my website live "is it secure? They can't access the filesystem if I do that?"...

    But well, my public files are separate from source files, should be ok for starters
