Dah, I wish I was better at painting. The easiest kind too - painting a room, not a picture. It's fine until I get to the edges. Then I mask off the area I don't want to paint, pull of the tape but no - turns out it's wonkier than a drunk student trying to walk in a straight line.

Go to touch it up, miss, get paint on the other bit I was trying to avoid. Great. Try taping it again - straighter this time - and it works, but then rips off chunks of paint when I take the tape off. Go to touch those bits up, then in my haste splatter it on the floor.

Seriously, how anyone can be this bad at this is beyond me.

    Are you realizing why we have whole professions centered around painting? Not art, but actually painting rooms and houses. I don't know if we appreciate the skills in these professions until we have to suffer through this. I know a really good general contractor and he HATES painting.

    @Demolishun yes but it sounds very easy 😅

    @Demolishun Oh I've never doubted the skill of professional painters. I just thought I could do a tad better than I did...

    @AlmondSauce I love learning from pros who do trades.

    You're using masking tape and not duct tape, right? I occasionally encounter doofi who use duct tape or even scotch tape to mask off parts of their wall and only discover their mistake when it pulls off all but the bricks.

    Ok mister painter, whatever you might have planned as your next step I hope you're staying away from politics

    @lorentz Definitely masking tape, I promise 😅

    @IHateForALiving That's simple right? You just talk a bunch of BS, make up some policies and pretend to care.

    I have painted quite a few houses in my life so maybe I can help with some tips if you have not already tried them :)

    Try using a professional painters masking tape instead of normal one (like the one in the picture). It will make the edge straighter as it will stick to the wall better and it won’t damage the surface. Make sure to press it down on the surface hard.

    Then always paint parallel with the tape, don’t go over the tape at perpendicular angle.

    A trick to prevent paint bleeding through the edge of the tape, is to first paint one layer with the same color as the part you want to keep unpainted first. It’s the first layer that tends to bleed through the tape and this way it won’t show and will rather seal the tape better to the wall.

    Remove the tape when the paint is still wet to prevent taking off chunks with it. If you paint several layers, wait til the last one is newly painted before taking it off.

    Hope that might help and good luck!
