We have 7000+ employees and I'm the only one who do dev work. IT had special meetings how to handle my requests. In the end they told me to buy a separate laptop and keep it outside the network. Suits me fine :)

    I don't even know where to start! That's ... just ... astonishing

If true, you will be out of business in a few years.

How are you the only dev? Do you work for a paper/print-only company? Tool and die? Or does your company mostly contract out development work? I'm confused...

I used to work for the regional development council. We were about 100 people. Now we are merged with the regional health care provider. So they have 7000 nurses, doctors etc who need maximum security to keep patient data safe. And me.

I sometimes make stuff that is used in production but mostly I'll make a POC and have consultants implement it properly. Worked on and off the last eight years with a Perl based library system and have a few patches in my name but mostly I'll write the specs and maybe tweak a thing or two in the patches I get from our consultants.
