Just say a silent "Thank you" to the Fates that you weren't using Bing when you did that. It wouldn't surprise me to learn that Microsoft is also the world's largest seller of enterprise-grade eye bleach. 🤣

@MadMadMadMrMim I help out packaging a fair number of FOSS projects for Debian-based distros. One of the more onerous aspects of it is properly declaring the licensing for all files in the source tarball. SPDX is the current widely-accepted standard for license declarations and provide common-sense syntax for dealing with things like license exceptions, disjunctive/conjunctive compound licenses, etc. Demonstration:
Files: foo bar
License: GPL-3.0+
Files: baz
License: GPL-3.0+ WITH Autoconf-exception-3.0
Files: debiansucksafatlowerordermammalsreproductiveorgan
License: GPL-3.0
Following the SPDX spec, for such a package I can include a single copy of the GPL-3.0 license header, plus standalone copies of each exception.
However Debian (using a standard that they published a dozen years ago) requires three copies of the GPL3 header, with the various exceptions stuffed into the middle of. It's just a lot of extra work for no reason is all. -
EISA slots! I see EISA slots on that thing, at least two of them! Oh man, where's my original SoundBlaster card when I need it?
That takes me right back to my very first job, building and supporting systems that looked exactly like that, filled with SIMMs and token ring cards and Quantum Fireballs aplenty. I remember unwrapping our first batch of 100 MHz FSB mainboards, the boss and I just stared at them for an hour and talked about how they'd probably power our first interplanetary spacecraft and other stuff we couldn't even imagine yet.
Now I'm old enough to know that the tech was shit then just as it still is now, but man do I miss that feeling of awe and the ability to dream earnestly of brighter futures. -
Since you have to do it over anyway, ditch GRUB and setup rEFInd instead. It's so much nicer, and there's even a driver available to take screenshots in the event you have a kernel panic or other critical failure on boot to help you debug it.

I work on whichever one is on fire the worst while all the rest turn into raging infernos themselves. When this career burns itself out I'm going to find a new one as a fireman with all the experience I've gained.

Grandmothers, the really good ones, never really die, their influence can be seen in what we do and how we live for the rest of our lives.
I had the unique privilege to not just be the first grandchild for one of mine but to be born on her birthday as well. We had a lot of similar personality traits and I even got to be the one to drive us several hundred miles and stand next to her when she took the oath to become a citizen of the U.S. where I was born. Growing up, she taught me how to cheat at card games and to comfort those who were sad or suffering.
We lost her nearly six years ago and I still hear her voice in my head everyday. I haven't celebrated my birthday once since she's been gone and don't know that I'll ever be ready to, but while I miss her presence, I know her life is affirmed everytime I cheat at a card game or drop whatever I'm doing to try and ease the sadness I see in a stranger.
Losing a grandmother is awful and I wish you well as you navigate it. Be safe, friend -
@theabbie fraktalisam _does_ sound like the kind of username a nascent AI might choose... ;)

Cosigned, fuck Medium up the goat ass.
It's one thing to make a total garbage platform and then erect a paywall around it later on, but Medium is actually pretty awesome and attracted a lot of people whose ideas and thoughts had value for me, just not enough to make me want to pony another damned monthly subscription fee post-paywall bait and switch. It was a lot healthier I'm sure than YouTube cat videos with my morning coffee, but they both get the job done as far as squirting the starting fluid into my mental carburetor. -
Aren't all large online group projects like this to a greater or lesser extent? I mean, you're not wrong about the StackExchange sites, but honestly they're a utopia compared to Wikipedia or Tvdb. Gather any sufficient number of humans under one banner and it's inevitable that sooner or later you'll reach a critical mass of shitbags and it quickly goes to hell. That's why I don't work on group projects anymore, I'd rather work three times harder to do it all myself than deal with that shit. Our species is a blight, plain and simple.

LOL, can't let a perfectly good chance for a BOOBLESS go by, of course. Who even looks at an LCD display of eight characters or more without that being the first thing that comes to mind?
Our generation was pretty cuckoo in the early years, but we've come through in the clutch since, and I like that. Maybe if our folks' generation had made boobless jokes growing up they wouldn't be in such epic need of babysitting now, lol. -
@NoMad You seem to be making a somewhat compelling argument, and yet I remain wholly unpersuaded.
If given the opportunity to switch genders outright (think I Dream of Jeannie, not some mad scientist procedure), would you actually trade in the twig and berries for an axe wound? I sure wouldn't, not without a shit-ton of stipulations and riders, at least. My heart goes out to woman kind, even with the lower prevalence of many diseases, longer life span and serial orgasms, biology fucks them over. Their entire relationship with reproduction, whether they want kids or not, is ever-increasingly at odds with modern lifestyles and a never-ending chore...that is, until it closes up shop in middle age and like an old jalopey they need to have a bag of tools just to get it out of the garage for an afternoon drive!
Gripe all you want, I tell them. I'll not only listen but offer my sympathy and refill your wine glass too! They've earned it. -
@IntrusionCM Amusing to see my favorite fruit and favorite vegetable mentioned in the same post, hah. Ironic, too, since I really dislike the whole Snappy movement and even more so the way Canonical is pushing it on users instead of letting them opt-in.
They still can't explain why so many of the build plug-ins are full of five year old libs either, or why it's still not possible to get snaps to automatically use the same themes as my natively-packaged apps. Grrrr... -
Depending on the skill and attractiveness of the person doing the ass fucking, that can be money well spent, if you ask me. I get your point, though, because, truly, Visual Studio would be the ugliest, most abusive, diseased ass-rapist on the planet if it had a dick.

You got a Lenovo T14, that means someone at work loves you. Be sure to find out who it is and remember them on Valentine's Day.

@10Dev I fear it's even worse, that they're already well on their way to becoming Microsoft when they were at their nadir. I used to get genuinely excited to find a Google solution to one of my problems, but now (just like I do with MS) I find myself thinking, "Well, hopefully if I keep looking I'll find one from someone else that does what I need."
-
You need to release this! It could be a real smash hit, considering how many devs today are 80s babies like me.

The rebranding is shit, can't argue with that. The rant, however, is beautiful. The Godfather is such a masterpiece; the older I get the more depth I see in it.
I'd like to know why we don't have nearly as many actors of that caliber in our era, or do we and I just don't know because all they appear in are those damn comic book movies that I find so asinine? -
apt install safe-rm + backup utility of choice (Duplicati is free and doesn't completely suck)
-
@theuser Fuck Medium, paywalls are antithetical to the spirit of the internet. Either your shit is good enough to let everybody see it or it's not.
