@Hazarth has the right answer unfortunately it seems like 90% of people who have heard of Carbon have decided that it is apparently supposed to replace C++ sometime next week and everyone is gonna be out of a job since C++ will die immediately hence the ridiculous meme spam that's been happening for the past few days
-
So kind of like Udemy but in blog/short video form?
I think that would be brilliant -
Manglement wants to mangle so they can justify not being replaced with a script
-
So basically they collect good pay while creating a system where they have to work slower and then they can blame it on "following the format of legacy code".
I'm not impressed but I have to admit, they do know how to milk a paycheck -
Given how easy it (at least seems to be in your circumstance) to give recognition to the right people I too would also be upset. It's one thing if management didn't know who did what and credited your whole department instead of you (although I would also be a bit upset there) but to give the entirety of the credit for your product (or at least portion of the product) to another department would be really upsetting.
Recognizing people is literally the cheapest way to keep an employee happy and feeling like they contributed to the organization. It costs literally $0 and a bit of time to track who did what.
If your management doesn't seem to care to give you your deserved credit or even your department credit for work you did (while they covered the bases to let you do that work) nor do they recognize they made an error and give you recognition after the fact then I would maybe start looking for another job.
They don't have to have hard working employees if they don't want to... -
Zorin OS is my default recommendation for anyone who wants to replace windows and move to Linux for just general computing usage. Glad you're enjoying it!
-
Yea for sure. You might even feel inclined to load up your open source software with some malware once people trust it or its part of a lot of dependencies and then when you get called out replace it with something else and pretend it never happened - you know, like with that node-ipc trainwreck.
I'm honestly on the fence about it. On one hand, the devs have the right to do whatever they want as long as it's legal.
On the other hand, I hate having a political message (even if I agree with it) forced on me especially when I'm just trying to do work which isn't politically related. I don't want to have politics rammed down my throat every day or even every update - just let me do my job in peace man -
Brush up your resume - it doesn't sound like it's worth it or like they respect you.

@CeladonCookie came here to say this
-
@magicMirror yup this. Now with the misstep of working late to get it done, OP can also say that they tried to get it done but passed out from exhaustion and weren't able to meet the deadline.
But yea OP, fail the deadline, make sure to CYA and don't do it again unless it's literally a life threatening kind of situation. I feel like this makes me sound like a dick but you have to hold the infrastructure team accountable for their work and this is an overstep. If the company wants to let them lock down everything to the point where you can't do your job then that's fine - just don't let it destroy your life outside of work and enjoy the fireworks (provide you've completed the CYA needed to protect yourself). -
I mean it's possible that covid dies down once we nuke each other into the stone age a few times over

Linux tends to be light weight compared to Windows so it can extend the life of an old computer by a year or two just be having the OS not hogging system resources.
Another positive is that you can choose what software you want on the device to a lower level than you can on Windows - this doesn't seem like a big deal but you can control what's on your machine much better.
Lastly is the issue of Microsoft spying or potentially spying on you. Telemetry sounds good but the reality is that you don't actually know what it is being transmitted - maybe it's just log data or maybe it's something more sinister. Also means that's extra surface area for an attacker to exploit.
One counter argument for Linux is that it can be more confusing to run things and figure things out especially for just general use. My recommendation is to try something like Zorin OS which gives you a not so bleeding edge OS but is stable and has a familiar interface and focus on comparability with Windows programs. -
Do yourself a favor. Brush up your resume, go on some job sites and shove your resume towards anything interesting or similar and see what happens. Maybe you'll attend a few interviews and get to see what people are willing to pay. Go home and see if what you're being offered is better than what you're getting. I'll bet it is - maybe you'll get less money but full insurance, maybe you'll get more money, maybe the same with much less responsibility.
Always keep your resume floating around in the market so that you know what your current value is in the market (even if you're not actually going to accept a job).
Also maybe ask one of the people you did work with if they have any openings where they work? -
@DirtEffect I was willing to see what they had to say until they used Breitbart as a source
-
Irc is still alive and well especially if you're looking at programming subjects
-
Sounds like you need a new job. And to tell the manager "okay well since I'm not on my work computer I guess I shouldn't be doing any work. So either I don't do any work until my work computer is fixed, or you let me do work on my personal computer and don't complain about something on my personal computer needing an update"
-
You can whine about failing if it actually fails, you haven't even launched it so how do you know...
-
@lungdart who knows, sounds like a great way to implement carpal tunnel
-
I don't mind puzzles but I don't really enjoy them for long periods of time, even in videogames.
Wordle is nice because it's one puzzle a day so you can't really get too bored or burn yourself out. Its not incredibly hard but I also don't feel dissatisfied if I don't get it right so it's not too much of an up or down, just a "make your brain think differently for 2-10 minutes" kinda thing (for me). -
Get everything it writing and make sure you save it. If it blows back on you, at least you have proof to defend yourself if needed
-
@electrineer the number of platforms this applies to .... Too many. Too many
-
Some days it really is like that. But you got this!!
-
And WW3 maybe if you factor in the Russian and Ukraine issue
-
You should maybe see a doctor for that. And look up ways to prevent and alleviate carpal tunnel as well as arthritis and implement them.
Things I've found to be helpful (at least with computer usage) are:
- getting a vertical mouse
- changing my keyboard for a better quality one
- focusing on stretches and exercises for my hands, wrists and forearms
- taking a short break every 20 to 30 min to stretch my wrists and let them relax
- taking a long break every hour or so and maybe doing another activity which doesn't include mouse and keyboard (such as going to make a cup of coffee, or even organizing my desk)
- adjusting my desk setup and chair height, sometimes changing things a bit helps
- staying off my phone, turns out holding and typing on my phone for long periods of time hurts my wrists as well
- laying on my bed and meditating for 20 minutes or so, I find it helps to relax especially if I don't even realize I'm straining things -
Sometimes dumb luck is all you need. Just be sure to take advantage of it and gain as much experience, training and skills as you can so you can keep that momentum going!

How'd the exam go?
