I'll just leave my favorite CSS blog post here in case it helps: https://stuffandnonsense.co.uk/arch...

While I don't disagree with @Jilano's advice (work is so much better if it's something you truly enjoy), it's also important to remember that you don't have to be passionate about what you do for a living. Sure, it helps, but some people just won't find something like that no matter how hard they look. And that's okay! If you're content, it's not making you miserable, you make a living and can clock out and then go do the things you ARE passionate about, that's a pretty good spot to be in.
I grew up being told that no matter what, people just want me to "be happy." I put too much pressure on myself trying to figure that out. I'm much "happier" not worrying about how happy I am, and just living my life. I found that I became more passionate about the things I was doing, because I wasn't second guessing myself.
But don't hold yourself back either - if you crave something more, go for it. You only live once (probably) -
@AlmondSauce Does it matter what the "worth" is? The way I see it, OP is just having fun by working on a problem with their own solution and sharing with devrant. The $5 incentive is to get people to play along. That kind of thing happens in other research fields all the time.
@Wisecrack I'll refrain from posting for now since you look like you have plenty of participants! -
As a front-end developer, front-end is the most annoying part of the job. Ptff 🤬
-
@djsumdog that anecdote escalated quickly
-
Moral of the story: never listen to front-end engineers.
Disclaimer: I'm a front-end engineer.
(but seriously what UI guy worth his salt would think that kind of latency was anything close to ok. I get pissed if my network calls take over 500 ms...) -
@Fast-Nop Not to mention that the warmer the climate, the larger the spiders.
-
Sometimes you just gotta shut everything down and go for a walk, or take the afternoon off to nap and read and decompress. Life sucks as it is so no reason to make it worse by beating yourself up when it becomes too hard to cope. Hope you're feeling better

I dunno, just looks like an amazing job of optimizing a function with an early return statement, nothing to see here

console.info('Problem averted, have a nice day!');

That guy sounds like he took the first two weeks of a free online AI/ML course and just spouted off as much jargon as he could remember.

Nice clean looking build, I have the same MB (and mouse lol). Enjoy!

Weird. We use @here all the time, but we have pretty small teams and create a lot of channels for specific uses. We also create groups, so we can tag a certain set of people on any given channel.
I mean, do they realize slack has settings to turn off notifications for @here and @channel? -
There's a lot of red flags here. Why were you in Uni for 7.5 years for only one degree? I don't know what specializations are, if they added to your CV maybe it was worth it, but usually someone who takes more than 4-5 years for a single major doesn't look great.
You keep saying IT - are you a software engineer? IT makes me think of the guys who install printers and network software. Important jobs, but don't pay as well as software dev.
Why do you fail your interviews when it comes to group work? Communication is very important in this industry, and collaboration is key. Even if you want to work for yourself as a contractor you have to be able to work with your clients, so there's no escaping it.
Sounds like you're more interested in a high salary than being a dev. You don't have to spend 20+hours outside of work to keep up, if you are pushing yourself at your work you will keep up naturally.
Not trying to be hard on you, just pointing out areas to improve if you want. Good luck. -
This is good. Javascript needs love. People who love something will treat it with respect and make it better.

hmmm

One thing to note about this situation and how it pertains to development jobs is that we are going to see (are actively seeing) a major shift towards enabling remote work for a lot of folks who couldn't do it before. Depending on how everything shakes out economically for the major world powers, there's going to be new opportunities for building and maintaining a massive online office infrastructure that was more of a niche before, and will soon become mainstream. So I would recommend paying attention to the companies your are applying for, and whether they have a strategy for adapting to the post corona world. The ones that do will thrive, the ones that don't will wither. All that being said, the overall job market in the short/middle term is going to suffer and wage growth will falter, but the world is still going to need devs

You're doing God's work my friend
-
They sound like morons.
Wear your headphones, but don't plug them in...put the end of the cord in your pocket or something. Then when they come to harass you show them it's not plugged in and say your ears are cold. Eventually they'll stop asking you about it and you can plug them in and listen to music. -
I do it too because I don't have the foresight to realize what I want until I've already typed it. I think 'oh I'll just cat real quick' and then, several minutes later when I've finished typing the command, I think 'oh that file is way too big, I should grep' and here we are.

Finally, an internet community we not only desire, but also one we deserve.
Bravo! -
"I fucking hope all the chocolate chips in your life turns out to be raisins."
Easily one of the best curses I've ever seen. I'm gonna steal that. -
Wow that's insane. You shouldn't have to put up with that kind of bullshit. I'd keep a detailed log of what you're are doing during the day and what things are being done to you and when. Try to create some sort of paper trail. I mean if they're installing keyloggers on your computer and trying to frame you by crashing sites, that has to be illegal. If there's noone in the company you can turn to for help you might be stuck having to quit, and then you have the crappy option of sueing or just letting them get away with it. But hopefully you can report this to HR or something?
You should keep the job and the paycheck for now and just do the minimum of what they ask of you. Spend the rest of the time looking for something better and polishing your resume. And make sure to keep your name clean. -
You have the best stories.
-
An electric kettle is pretty nice too, especially if your tapwater is unsafe. Doesn't make it taste better, but kills all the nasty bugs.
-
I dunno, I remember how thrilled I was to see "hello world" work for the first time. Like you said, every small victory counts
-
I thought that was the Chicago Bulls logo as I was scrolling past, imagine my surprise
-
Ahaha, I can just hear the line "Well now I can't click on the navigation anymore". How do you not slap?
And you sure are generous, not even putting quotes around the term "designer" -
I tried putting myself in your shoes by imagining that we were ordered instead to constantly gather in groups of 50+ people and socialize non-stop for the next 2 weeks. I almost had a nervous breakdown just thinking about it. Sending virtual hugs to all the suffering extroverts out there.

I used to run this on my PS3. Still would if I had my PS3 hooked up, guess I should look into the PC version (or just dig it out of the closet)
