Thanks for the responses.
As I said, I pretty much knew this was the case, but I was hoping someone would tell me otherwise.
I try my best to not need any GPS or directions. I get along okay because I was born and raised in this same area, but it is getting more and more difficult to get by without.
I always appreciate the help -
@TheCommoner282
At the very least I can confirm that that’s not true. When I was hired, we were using VMs that were not licensed properly because no one knew there were requirements we had to follow. I spent my first month with the company fixing this and verifying all physical machines were licensed as well -
@lamka02sk nope. Milky way is milky way.
@Codex404 they sell them in blue and brown wrappers. Ive seen brown ones more commonly than blue where i live -
@milkyway I really have no choice in this. It is yours

Thank you everyone for such kind comments! I was nervous to share these thoughts here but I'm glad to see such a supportive dev community.
@Nanos I don't know that my moment would necessarily help you. I was in an extremely altered state of mind (to use family-friendly language) and fell really depressed. I kind've realized "Oh. I do this a lot so that I'm distracted and don't think about why I'm so unhappy" and once I had that thought it was like I couldn't stop. I just let myself feel bad and admitted to myself "This is a problem. I shouldn't ignore this. I need to get help". Then I thought deeper about why I was so unhappy and what things I could do to correct that. I felt spiteful that I had fallen so low mentally and that gave me enough resentful determination to "suck it up" and start "fighting back". At least that's what it felt like. Somewhere along the lines, I stopped being so depressed and anxious and angry and gained confidence in myself and excitement for my future. -
++ for making me genuinely laugh

@Mitiko i appreciate it very much! Thanks for being supportive

@Mitiko @hitko
Allow me to embarrass myself:
I am using Docker EE on Windows Server 2016 VMware instance. I am simply trying to deploy a static web page and connect to it from a separate, physical machine on the same domain network.
I have run into a million problems, and each time I fix one, another pops up. I did get this to work on Docker for Windows on my Windows 10 work laptop (first attempt even), but I cannot replicate anything successful with Docker EE on WS2016.
Right now, I cannot seem to get IPs assigned to container instances. Ive tried statically assigning and using DHCP.
The ultimate end goal is to completely containerize one of our applications for all stages of development.
The company has never used docker before and is leaving me in charge of figuring this out.
I have read so much documentation and even community-created guides and tutorials, but for some reason Docker will not function as expected.
I have no clue how I'm going to take on an entire legacy application, when I can't even seem to resolve this.
I know I will find a solution, and it will probably be something ridiculously easy or obvious, but for now I remain frustrated. -
@Mitiko that looks amazing and would definitely help me a ton, but I'm on Windows Server 2016 because work and that seems to only be available to Linux and Mac

Ive seen many people get into the field without college. More often than not, i find devs and other techies who went to college for something completely unrelated to tech (a linux security guy that I am friends with majored in history and minored in sign language. He's lead on his team and makes a damn good paycheck).
It depends on if you have a foot in the door to establish a job position, and also can depend on what other "extracurriculur" things you do.
I, for example, needed to go to college because my already existing skills were not well enough to land a stable job. My "extracurriculars" also consisted of things like volunteering at an animal shelter and running family events for my step fathers company, neither of which showed that I possessed any dev skills or interest. I had interviewed for many, and all of them ended along the same lines: rejection from lack of exposure/initiative.
I now have a two year degree in computer science from a really really cheap technical school and got hired after my first interview, while still receiving 4 other offers from companies.
I would say that I really didnt learn much at all at school, but the degree has greatly improved my career security.
College ended up being the right choice for me, personally. But I dont think everyone needs to do it if they have the right things going for them. -
@icycrash sorry, I didnt see your question. Its financial consultation. So she takes care of taxes, finding loans for people, debt consolidation plans, etc. So yes, she will absolutely be fined. I believe she has already been fined $2500.
She truly does not get the seriousness of the situation.
This is the same woman who thought she had a sticky note on her desk somewhere with my social security num on it, without realizing that i had shredded it 2 years ago. -
@icycrash she still probably wont lmao. I dont know, shes just a very frustrating person. Yesterday when i went to visit her and my gramma, it didnt seem like she had done anything in response to the audit. Shes probably thinking it's no big deal and that she can keep getting away with it. Itll be a damn rude awakening when thats not the case
-
@icycrash yes. She used 3 different gmail accounts. Not the company's fault because she's the owner lmao. I have been using protonmail for 2 years and have recommended it to her and her clients at least 30 times, especially because she repeatedly asks me how to encrypt email. I have no clue why she was so fucking stubborn about switching, but i bet she wish she did now.
-
@sbiewald No, there were many security violations. I was trying to clarify that the vpn itself was an issue because of company policy.
-
@TheCommoner282 Her company requires vpn use in their service contract thing with clients. So its more the fact that she broke her own internal business function policies.
I should have clarified. -
@Krokoklemme i was going to say that i need one lol
-
@AlmondSauce Thank you very much! And thank you for your advice. I did go onto their blog and was able to ask them a question regarding a recent development change they had undertaken, and they were definitely surprised to be asked. It was a great idea
-
@acelan Thank you very much! You're very kind
-
@acelan update! I got the offer!
-
@acelan The interview itself went kind of odd. They only asked about my college plans and why I was interested in Dev Ops. The rest of the questions and discussion were left up to me to lead. I was nervous due to this and I think it showed, but at least they got a real glimpse of my personality.
I did learn that this is the company's first time taking on interns ever, so they have no real solid training or work plan. The Dev Ops team consists of two people, and come this May, an intern.
I sent a thank you note on Friday, and should hear some sort of response from them this week. -
@acelan Well thank you! Its very nice of you to go through the extra bit of effort to help me out! I appreciate it greatly. Ill definitely look into CALMR and SAFe. Im a very nervous and anxious person naturally so im going to try my best to perk up make sure that my enthusiasm and interest is noticed.
@AlmondSauce Thanks! I do already have a list of questions made that I plan to ask the company involving how they incorporate tools together, how their products are meant to be integrated and how they decide to handle certain tasks. I have not looked at their blog posts, but thats a great idea! Ill give it a shot -
Nice to hear youre doing well! Cheers ~
-
@Mitiko if it were that simple, this rant wouldnt have been made.
I did get position: sticky; to work once.
That was a good day.
No clue why the hell I've never gotten it to work again. I hate front-end. -
@AleCx04 thanks for the kind words :) all will end up well
-
@Dimmerworld i dont use google as my search engine, instead i use ddg. I just didnt look well enough, because you are right. I was able to find a free pdf after going and searching again.
@endor very helpful information!! Thank you, ill bookmark this for future use :)
@BurnoutDV i wouldnt be opposed to this idea at all, but this class is online and i have no idea who my class mates even are nor where they are located. I imagine this option might not be the easiest thing to put together -
@Dimmerworld I looked online yesterday for an available pdf and must not have looked hard enough because i didnt find one. Your comment literally makes me wanna cry; I could have saved so much money today if I had just found that same pdf that you did. Im gonna just go to bed now
-
@AleCx04 I was definitely played. I typically can buy from Amazon for better prices but it didnt work out for me that way this time.
My school is basically one giant bully. We dont find out what books we need, how much they are or how many we need until first day of semester (yesterday). Each individual class gets to decide the deadline in which you must have the book by, or else they drop you from the class and you cant take it. My lovely and kind teacher required that we have the textbook by today. This literally left me no choice except to buy the book at the campus store today, since Amazon cant fulfill it that quickly, or drop the class and delay my graduation date.
This is the same school that tried to tell me I dont get a grant because I make over $90,000/year, when they HAVE AND ALWAYS HAD my employment papers as proof that i make $13,000/year.
The school embarrasses itself. -
@C0D4 Its called 'System Analysis and Design in a Changing World' and comes with an online access code for something (which i dont need for class) so i think the priced was raised due to that. Yet, they didnt offer any that came without the code so who knows.
Textbooks are very expensive. I had to pay over $500 for my Java textbook (i couldnt rent because I needed it for longer than a semester) but that thing was as thick as a phone book. This new $429 textbook is the smallest textbook ive ever had and the second most expensive -
@anudroid unfortunately i have, many times. I ran out of ideas to try on how to make it work. The deadline for the project was today, so i had to just abandon this issue and design it a different way. Annoys me though that i never got it fixed
-
@DucksCanCode i dont necessarily think thats the problem. I ended up testing just file i/o streams with normal text files and still get the error. So i dont think the issue lays with just this one xml file
