Minimum pay, minimum effort. There’s nothing wrong with adjusting the value you provide to a company in situations like these.

I feel that pain. Working with Oracle’s Netsuite is all SOAP and it was one stupid thing after another.
Elect me for president in November and I will make SOAP illegal. -
@C0D4 @C0D4 I hear you. I use Ubuntu, I toy around with more technical distributions when it’s not my dev rig- Ubuntu just works out of the box and is super stable. I’ve got an NVIDIA card in my laptop and they integrated Linux drivers in the installer.
Frankly- the biggest hurdle for gamers right now is the selection of games. It’s very good through Steam but I’m way too much of a casual gamer to have a recommendation worth listening to haha.
As for a dev environment you might be surprised with how clean and performing Ubuntu 20.04 is. I didn’t have to give anything up. Wouldn’t nuke a computer to try it but give it a shot in a VM sometime.
Best of luck with dat windows. -
@N00bPancakes Fair ‘nuff. I’ve worked on creating a personal boilerplate set of Sass files with baseline buttons, uniform padding/spacing, great mixins/functions, and a global master variables file that set a lot of baseline values for a lot of that. Has been super helpful. Didn’t happen overnight- just had a separate templated project that I could copy to new projects and dropped in improvements as I’ve made them.
I’ve enjoyed it and was happy when I was able to drop Foundation. -
Is there any reason to use a CSS framework now that Flexbox is supported everywhere?
-
Any reason not to run Linux? I walked away from Windows to go to Mac, Macs started becoming less worth the price and lacks innovation, switched to Linux and have been really happy with it.
-
@uyouthe All good.
-
@uyouthe Friend says that he uses Adguard as well. Thinking that it may be blocked at the ISP level? Do you get any specific error when you try to use it?
-
@uyouthe I’ll look into this and see if there’s a reason or more information.
-
@uyouthe Can you detail your setup? Both curious for personal use and can ask my friend to get more information about it.
-
@uyouthe They source the “raw” results from Google but have the same monetization as DDG serving non-tracking ads. No storing of personal data or IP addresses. Ads are based on search term. Even personal preferences for the search engine can be stored in a GET string so no cookies are created- you just load the home page with that string to preserve your preferences. You have the option of sending your query as a POST rather than GET so that your browser history doesn’t contain previous searches.
My friend is a privacy blogger and hit them pretty hard on their transparency. He was able to interview the CEO and get the details and push them to be more open about this information.
Dev searches on DDG were pretty frustrating but I do not want to use Google for all the reasons we agree on. Having a privacy oriented company exist as a proxy provides a great solution. -
@uyouthe Any details/reasons?
-
@NoMad Small companies get bought by bigger companies. If you care about data privacy then keep it in mind across the board.
-
You didn’t expect this when Facebook bought Instagram?
-
Check out StartPage. Google results by a privacy oriented company.
-
Care less about titles. Care more about whether you find the work challenging and enjoyable. I’ve had a director title at an ad agency and all we made were marketing and product websites. Had a “regular” dev title and worked on integrations. Decide what is important to you- your skills or your title.

@bittersweet I think I've seen that before. I just left a job with a team where Foundation was a standard thing. It since I'm not there I'm not married to anything. I'll check it out.
-
There are no dumb ques-
Well yeah, there are dumb questions. -
@runfrodorun I think until front end frameworks like Bootstrap and Foundation use it we'll still see it.
That and the plugins... all the goddamn plugins. -
I use Git alone and it's helped not only for the tools, but there was a time I was too overloaded with work and I was able to bring another dev in to help just by adding her to the repo. She had access to the log, branching, and the tools right off the bat.
It's like programming in general- take advantage of the tools we have and plan for the future. -
The entire internet is janky AF.
-
Sublime and Vim. On OS X and Linux respectively.
-
Oh man this is bad- not even any commenting to help future developers.
-
@cyberlord64 How long have you been single?
-
Same here. Getting increments from this person/bot.
-
@jxsl13 Thats the trajectory I'm not looking forward to. I see them focusing on making more moves to iOS style computing and ecosystem device integration than actual innovation.

Open Notepad++

Sounds like you're in between projects at the moment.

I used to jailbreak my every iPhone I got but I slowly stopped. I guess I needed the tweaks less and less. My phone texts, internets, calls, and tethers. I've had an iPhone since 1st gen and just went with it.
That said I've always wondered what was on the other side of the fence... -
Start getting paid to do it.
