I wrote a program in excel 4; this was pre-VBA and you did, in fact, write everything in cells. It had a GUI, created dynamic sql files for DB2 and executed them in a spawned command shell, read the results and created new spreadsheets with graphs. All using code like
=while(not(isblank(active.cell)))
I can still remember that line all these years later...😂 -
@Gophyr Sorry, but apparently the recyclers were helping getting the equipment out of the room; went straight into the truck and to parts unknown.
-
@Gophyr boss is out today but back tomorrow, haven't forgotten and will update you when I talk to him.
-
@Gophyr I'll ask my boss what is gonna happen to them and report back. They're in Chicago.
-
@Gophyr alphaserver es40
-
@Gophyr yep, they were pulled in working condition. The one in front had its covers removed for some reason to get it out of the server room.
-
@netikras Funny story about the machine in back: it had to be shut down and when it came back up it wouldn't attach to the external disk array. After several panicky hours on a Sunday night it turned out the battery on the raid controller had died; quick run to the 7-11 across the street saved production starting on Monday morning.

May not help in this situation, but I had a similar issue in Java complaining that "Date" was incompatible with "Date"; turned out it was a namespace clash (java.sql.Date and java.util.Date) and no, they're not directly compatible (lol).
-
@djsumdog thinking about doing that, see how well it works with 512k of ram. 🙃
-
@gitpush IE was on there, but it faired worse, wouldn't use the proxy server.
-
Ahhh! My eyes!!
-
Ah Midtown Madness, a fun if underrated game that let you drive in Chicago...
-
@carlosjpc WASD keyboards
-
@bittersweet I am worried about that; we'll see how long it lasts...I suppose I could buy replacement keycaps :\
-
@Linux From WASD Keyboards...here's an article about it: https://medium.com/usevim/...
And yep, it's mine-all-mine :) -
(my connection: I was asked to set up an AD group so that only specific people can use it)
-
@Divisionbyzero yeah sorry, I use WTF in a lot of contexts 😳
-
Typo in my post, opening comment tag is missing the exclamation point.
-
Oh, and we ran it on Solaris.
-
After a reorg I was left with a job that required me to load one file into a database once a month. I quit soon thereafter, as it was just horrible feeling like the setup to some bad joke or dystopian story.

Swift, Go, and C++

Can this code be run in a background thread?
-
@milkybarkid I've pulled a lot of stuff from these boxes over the years.
-
@bubble This is our garbage box at work; every few months the company pays to have everything in the box recycled. We throw away a lot of equipment.
-
Lubuntu is pretty snappy on older hardware. I keep a core2 duo ThinkPad running with it and it still feels quite usable with the latest version (zesty).
-
So far my computers have straight-up died on me, saving me the emotions expressed in the cartoon (e.g. "That job was running for *weeks* and now you decide to blow a cap on the motherboard????")
-
@3141 You're correct, I just thought it was interesting how macOS presents a clean and organized list in the Finder, but behind the scenes it's a bigger and messier list than a casual user might realize.
-
@wolt e5 Xeon
-
@moshmage you're right, I let good taste get the better of me. What was I thinking?? 😩
-
@norman70688 Mmm, I've used them but they never give me the 'right' name that conveys the proper purpose to both me and everyone else on the team.
They are a lot of fun, though.
