Summary

Community written book on Programming Languages

Description
Just a thought I had while teaching someone. They complained about the language and how another was much better. I explained the history of why the language is the way it is, and what problems it was trying to solve. Idea: Basically a book written by us at devRant. We would explain the history of each language, why it was made, what problems it solved. Also what it is good at solving and what it can't (or is bad at). Why: Because it would be kinda fun? Jokes aside, I think it would help developers understand a language (and hopefully respect it). Widen the devs toolkit, and make them flexible at tackling issues. How: We have a community full of experts in basically every field. I guess it's a mystery.

    @Michelle this may be something up your alley.

    @Bittersweet Your skills in the area of description are hard to match. You'd be great at this, if you're interested.

    I see that there are a few people interested in making this a real book. So let's do it, I'll open up a GitHub repo for it. Will update in a bit, anyone got a title?

    @Stuxnet
    You're 100% correct.

    I like it. :)

    EDIT: Is it going to be published? Or is it for fun?
  • 5
    @Michelle
    I'm thinking both, mostly for fun. But when it's complete we can send it out into the world. We could probably get it printed too.

    @ODXT
    Are you thinking about getting it traditionally published which means, with a publisher? If so, I know alot about this industry. I'm a writer, after all.

    If you're thinking about just putting it online, then I have no idea how that would work, because people probably won't see it.

    If you're thinking getting it self published, then don't even think about, and let's just do it for fun. Self publishing will most likely end in failure, and it's expensive asf.

    @Michelle
    Thanks for the advice. I agree with what you said, make the book for us. If at the end of the day people want to publish it, then we'll look at those options. For now let's just make a nice book.

    @Michelle
    PS what communication platform do you want to use to collaborate? Mostly seen Glitter.im and Discord as good options. Also, got a suggestion for a title for the GitHub project?

    @ODXT
    I use Discord and Signal. We can use Discord if you want. Who else is working on it?
    I don't have a suggestion rn.

    If you want we can move the repo to the DevRant-Squad Organization on GitHub. (Will be renamed to devRant-Community sometime)

    Would be really cool to have more community projects there.
    Here's the link:
    https://github.com/devRant-Squad

    Will invite you to the team.

    I've actually written a fair amount in my time (nothing too serious but I've written for several small publications and shirt stories) so if it would need an editor I'd be happy to lend a hand.

    @Proximyst
    If it's to help with the book, then yes.

    I had checked it when we moved it. It looks like it's still working. But yeah, I'll update it in a bit. Make sure that copying it works.
