Summary

Free (crowd funded?) Hosting for NGOs, individuals and projects that is promoting, building or distributing free software (FOSS/FLOSS)

Description
Hosting (email, git, storage, mirroring) for NGOs, individuals and projects that is promoting, building or distributing free software for a very low cost or even free. It would be completely crowdfunded and non-profit. Every single cent will go to back cover infrastructure costs and maintenance. Thoose who want to use it, would have to write and application in order to get "accepted" into the environment, or pay a "startup fee". That way we don't overwhelm ourself. Requirements in order to start: Hardware: router+IPS/IDS (opnSense or pfsense) servers for containers/VM's storage for storing the VM's and containers Internet: Minimum 250mbit up/down. Gigabit prefered Our own ASN would be cool but expensive. We would atleast have our own dedicated IP-range with the WHOIS-contact pointed to our org. Location: Hopefully at my work, or any other place with physical access. Using our own hardware is important. Services: Webhosting Git (probably gitea) Email (pro version of iRedmail would be awesome) Some storage (nextcloud?) Mirroring of linux distros and other projects (already avaible at https://mirror.linux.pizza) Name: I was thinking about LinuxPizza, I already own the domain linux.pizza and it is maybee suited for such use. Linux and Pizza is quite similar - "Because you can have it as you want." Financing: Hopefully we could get hold of some sponsors, and accept donations. Of course everything would be ad free Is this something that would be interesting for the community? Would you consider to donate to something like this?

    Did you heard of teahub? (teahub.io)

    IMHO that could be a great occasion to collaborate between the two foundation (because we need things like Mailservers and such...)
  • 2
    Or at least you wouldn't need to host a Gitea instance if there's already someone who does that with the same goals 🤔

    @kolaente
    Have not heard about teahub actually. The main BIG problem with teahub is that it is hosted by AWS which is a US company. And therefore is under the "Cloud act". Buy having our own hardware in at a smaller cloudprovider we would not be affected by it.
  • 2
    @Linux where did you find that? AFAIK we host it on some hetzner server (at least for now)
  • 2
    @Linux and as the foundation will probably be based in Germany, it makes absolutely no sense to use servers in the us 🤔
  • 2
    @kolaente

    They are using AWS in Frankfurt and not Hertzner. Check the whois if the IP :)

    ec2-54-93-185-254.eu-central-1.compute.amazonaws.com
  • 2
    @Linux where did you check?
  • 2
    @Linux ah ok I see, about.teahub.io is aws. Weired.
  • 2
    @kolaente

    dig about.teahub.io

    dig -x 54.93.185.254
  • 1
    @kolaente

    Btw, are you involved in the project?
  • 2
    @Linux well I guess I'll ask the others why we host the about page on aws while having a hetzner server who's IP points to the tld 🤔😂

    @kolaente

    Also, I am pretty sure that cloud act includes DNS. So you should look into that too and change it.
  • 1
    @Linux somehow, I'm a contributor of Gitea and some people over there started that and asked other contributors to join in.
    We currently search the 7 members nessecary for the foundation.
  • 1
    @Linux got an answer, we're serving that about page via netlifly (which seems using aws) at least for now. But the main Gitea instance will be hosted on our own servers in Europe.

    @Linux wanna join the discussion over on our matrix channel?

    https://matrix.to//...

    @kolaente
    I will maybe join, I dont know what I can contribute to it thou :p
  • 1
    @Linux knowledge probably :D
    IMHO we could collaborate with you project, once both are live.
  • 0
    @kolaente
    Only if the others are interested in it :)
  • 1
    @Linux Sure, that would be a reason to join the channel I guess 😅

    I am Not a Hardware Architect but I liked your idea, if there's anything I could do from Development (Frontend, Backend, Graphics Illustrations)
  • 2
    @inf3cti0n95
    I am not a graphics guy, or I cant do some code either actually so there would probably be something for you to do :)

    I am currently "scouting" if there is any interest and need for it.

    @AlpineLinnix
    I am to stupid.

    @Linux
    Actively interested in getting something like this off the ground. I’m a junior Linux automation engineer with a networking background based in the US. Could I be helpful?
  • 3
    @AlpineLinnix
    Devs write code, I am taking care of that everything else works :)
  • 3
    Highly interested.
  • 1
    Interested, could contribute code, but IDK how much of that is needed.
  • 1
    I'd love to contribute to something like that!!
  • 1
    Would like to help. Intermediate in JS(Vue and react) and C++. Beginner in python
  • 1
    I'd be up for helping.

    Im in with my limited knowledge

    Would it be worth setting up a crowdfunding campaign?
  • 0
    @Linux yes, could be worth it!
  • 1
    That's a fantastic idea, to be honest. And, if I can help in some way, i would love to

    This is stuff that I would donate money too.

    What license should it use?
