I have an opportunity to buy a cheap ThinkPad which I want to install Arch Linux on to get more familiar with Linux. So I want to setup the environment and try to use it as my home PC to write code, watch YouTube etc. No gaming.

Is it worth it? It’s not a lot of money but definitely not free either. Does anyone have any experience going from OS X to any Linux/GNU? I’m not expecting to enjoy it so much that I’ll switch permanently but who knows.. And what about ThinkPads, good stuff?

If you just want to try out Linux than use a virtual machine until you are familiar with it. After that you can partition your hard drive and boot with Linux using a USB or a CD.

I have the Think pad T430. I bought for a little under $300 and it's really great! The only problem with it is that the colors aren't accurate. Though, I've never been happier with a laptop before. Thinkpads are a great choice.

Think pads are nice. And they have nipples, so bonus.
