Hey guys! I've just written Part 1 of a post on Privacy and how we're tracked these days. It's intended more for those who don't know about the issue or would like to learn more. Part 1 is mostly a long overview of the kinds of things that happen these days in regards to privacy and tracking.

@linuxxx I figured you wouldn't. But the intention here is for more non-techies, so I figure a hybrid approach will work best in terms of keeping important things safe and still having "functionality" of the things people use everyday like YouTube and social media.

You quote Edward Snowden: "no different than saying you don't care about free speech because you have nothing to say" but you also say: "[it] is a choice to be made by the individual on whether or not they want to continue giving up everything about themselves."

Don't you think you are straight up invalidating the importance of the rest of your article by the latter statement? Isn't it important to protect people against things that are not in the interest of the general public?

@balte Interesting point. I'm not necessarily trying to convince anyone though. It's about giving information to those who seek it.
Ultimately, people do have free will. If they don't want to act on something that's all well and dandy, but the consequences are on them regardless of whether they like it or not. That's what I'm trying to get across.

@balte haha it's cool! It's just my experience in life that it's best to not try and force ideas upon others. You can see this in religious conversion as well. I'm an atheist but I go to church with my girlfriend on Sundays. Hear a fair few conversion stories there and they all go the same way: giving information and being non-forceful about it.

Obviously in some cases you have to be more direct (e.g. climate change) or everyone will suffer. It's a tight balance.

Entire article except for the conclusion - agreed!

Then, I personally find it evil if, when you use a service for emailing/social networking/whatevering, you are automatically integrated into any form of mass surveillance networks..

Also, it indeed is up to the user to decide what they use but when you use mass surveillance-integrated tools, you're also taking away the choice/ability for privacy/retaining control of one's data for some people and that's horrible imo.
