uhh, what the hell... I opened 3 screenshots, not massive raw files. I wonder if they made the photos app based on electron as well huh3

*never* come into a GitHub repository to hijack all the issues with microscopically different questions that are largely off topic from the original issue.
but if you do, and you manage to go as far as to tell the developers that they are practically lying to your face because after all "you think the same code can easily do that other thing", then go fuck yourself in the arse with the biggest pole you can find and walk straight into hell.
it's probably a better option than my stone cold wrath anyway. -
I'm looking for a distro that is more modern than Ubuntu 16.04, not the shithole that Ubuntu 17.10 is and works, practically, out of the box with my xps 9560.
this 17.10 update thing is driving me nuts. the plot twist is.. if I don't get it set up before tomorrow I'll just switch to windows.17 -
Ubuntu (probably) fucked up some upgrade and I wasn't able to use lvfs anymore. (damned meltdown/spectre bug) so... I figured it'd be a "good" idea to reinstall dbus. well.. the alternative was reinstalling Ubuntu so I figured I could at least try. obviously it didn't work out.. at all.
sooo here's me thinking I'll just insert my live media and live on with my life. nope. the fucking live media is corrupt. so, here I am now, contemplating why I was such an idiot.2 -
to all of you out there scared to get into a Dev position because of no formal education:
I don't have any finished formal education, just a bunch of experience from pet projects and free lance here and there. I applied for a position this morning, got an email before the afternoon with an invitation for an interview!
companies are looking for brains, not pieces of paper. just take the jump and try!3 -
dammit. I fucking hate it when I get stuck because of low level computing concepts and there is no explanation on Google.
like.. I understand the difference between an int and a float, but no one ever explains how you convert 32bit signed vectors to floats. or how bgra and rgba differ. or how to composite two images on a GPU. etc. the internet is great and all, but fuck, sometimes it seems as everyone is just as dumb as I am.4 -
I'm starting to get sick of people calling out js for being what it is, a terrible pile of shit, without taking any effort learning the language. just because you wrote an app in java or python doesn't mean you're entitled to a free certificate in any language with a name that makes it sound easier.
in fact, I'd claim that for an experienced programmer, Java is much easier to pick up than JavaScript.
but, if all you want to do is sit here and complain, and you can find no joy in reading pages on end of documentation... well then, the only thing you're missing out on is the biggest fucking platform of the world. so don't worry I guess. it'll be fine. right? eventually the users will see that the web is just a nuisance for developers and they'll all start using native apps...6 -
my industrial design lecturer keeps these sticky notes attached to the palmwrest of his laptop permanently, and I always wondered what was on it.
well today was the day I found out... its his fucking iCloud password😧3 -
Hello,
I have gone through all the options that your public API has for syncing data, and i can now officially say that stripping an iFrame of a Google Drive page would be better than the piece of shit mutation methods you have come up with.
Most sincerely,
A fucking annoyed dev that just wasted about 4 hrs on your shit. -

A local television station on the other side of the country has been running my software for about two years now and today I finally went to see them. (and deploy a completely rehauled version)
It was so awesome to see these people in real life for the first time. They were nice and hospitable. I'm really glad my software is contributing to what they are doing :D12 -
I had to give a presentation to my industrial design lecturer and he complimented me (me, the computer science student doing an elective) on the visuals of my presentation 😄

Twitter has become just like Facebook now, where if you click on something interesting and then press the back button everything will be fucking gone. this shit is horrendous and not how webbrowsers work. I don't know what apeshit thought of this but it needs to stop. The back button takes me back to where I was. not to new content.12

I'm following an elective on User Centered Design, and he just showed a screenshot of a Command Line Interface and called it "linux"
This fucking illiterate asshole...1 -
OSC, or open sound protocol, does not have a Boolean type. instead, the Boolean true has type true and the Boolean false has type false.
what.
well.
at least the problem wasn't in my code? -
okay, here goes:
my last job I got through sending a tweet to someone I knew from working on an open source project. I found the open source project through going to a conference. I found the conference through being an active user on a forum.
so basically, this is how I justify myself when I spend too much time on devRant. you never know, 1 day it might work out! -
My landlord has a workspace below my room, and he had to install wifi for his workspace yesterday. except he couldn't, so he asked me. which I guess is fine, he made very polite request so I figured: might as well.
so I go down, and it's one of these typical isp boxes. I connect my laptop and start messing around with ifconfig and ip route listing. I wouldn't normally even use ip route, but I've been doing a project involving multiple networks. Anyway, I switch networks a few times (my own network is obviously up and running) so I can google for router passwords. by the time I'm finished with everything my landlord thanks me, and goes on about "how he is always impressed by how people can just type into keyboards and things start working"
in reality, all I did was connect his cable to DSL when he had connected it to PSTDN himself.5 -
whenever I suspend my laptop my openvpn would get stuck on reconnecting and I'd have to ctrl c and wait for like minutes so it would correctly close. so I only used VPN when I really needed it.
but then I found out: mullvad (my VPN host supports wireguard! and so wireguard is a more passive protocol, and doesn't need to keep open the connection. so now I can just set my VPN to "always on" and not worry about it anymore, yay!
ps: you should have seen my face when I found out mullvad gives away free stickers! :D -

At my university, we are not allowed to use the internet during exams (duh). But it is disabled using a windows program. I quote from a group chat:
"If you read up a bit, you'll discover that anything works besides Windows"
"Which is basically the story of my life"1 -
I had a lunch lecture on AI today, and the guy who gave it was like: don't worry AI is like really stupid right now it won't take over the world. in fact, AI right now is about as smart as a mouse!
my thoughts: how good are you at catching mice? because I don't feel like running after one for sure2 -
I can get absolutely dead pissed by the fact that a FUCKING 1800 euro laptop can't do a fucking basic thing like connecting to a bloody WiFi ap?
so why, you wonder? oh no, the problem isn't the fucking hardware. IT'S THIS DEAD BEAT PIECE OF SHIT CALLED WINDOWS. mfw when it runs fine under Linux, BUT WE CANT HAVE NICE THINGS CAN WE ADOBE?!?8 -
after weeks of living on my own the inevitable occurred.
I forgot to eat.
it's so distracting to eat. When I'm focused on something I just want to get it done. but by the time I'm done it's way past eating time.13 -
My cs program at university forces a style "guide", but the best thing is, in order to comply you'd have to rewrite all the default classes. Because apparently, an if statement followed by a single statement needs curly braces.
You'd think these fuckers would know what they're talking about...4
